Thread: FAQ: How do the unarmed +damage bonuses work? What is the damage/delay of fists?
It's very common to wonder how various combat mechanics supposedly work. This FAQ will serve as part of a list of FAQ's discussing various game mechanics and how they are thought to work and (for some) how they are intended to work. These two things are not always the same mind you. These mechanics can change and they are not always understood perfectly. If you have reason to doubt any of these FAQ's please let me know asap.
The Teras Kasi Artist profession and Unarmed branch of brawler receive a unique +damage bonus. This helps to offset the overall low damage output of bare fists. A common question is: how do these damage bonuses work? The answer is very simple, these damage bonuses stack basically as though they were raw weapon damage and they stack on top of unarmed damage or damage while wielding a weapon. An unarmed user with a +50 damage, using a Vibroknuckler that deals 50-150 damage, will actually deal damage equivalent to using a 100-200 damage vibroknuckler.
Note that when you deal damage with normal attacks you will actually deal around 1.5x your base damage. While using specials you will use the multiplier of the special.
Fists deal 10-20 damage with a delay of 4 seconds and and armor piercing value of 0. So a Master Teras Kasi Artist's fists are equivalent to 260-270 damage weapons with a delay of 4. At this time I am not certain what the ranged modifiers or special costs are intended to be for fists. Note that a Master Teras Kasi artist will have over 100 speed bonus and therefore their fists will always attack at a 1s delay anyway.
This explains why it is commonly advised for people to use Vibroknucklers while grinding through the unarmed branch of brawler. At that stage, you will not be certified for vibroknuckler use, which will lower your damage to nearly nothing. However fist damage is already very low and primarily comes from your +damage modifiers. At this low level, vibroknucklers can attack with a much lower delay than fists (sliced VK's can go as low as a 1.4s delay) and with only a negligible loss in damage. Thus vibroknucklers, even when uncertified, will deal better damage over time.
