Thread: How many pieces of armor should you use?

When I took the Brawler tree to masterI finally broke down and bought myself a couple of pieces of good 73% Kinetic Resist Ubese (I mainly fight animals). Just the Jacket made a big difference in the amount of damage I took but, asI'm a role player Scout and usually "too far from town" to fight buffed, once I added the Pants my HAM was getting so low it made me nervous and I haven't bought the rest of the suit.

What I was curious about is what other people's experience with armor has been. Do the extra pieces make a big enough difference to try and work around their HAM pentalties? Should I get more pieces or go back to the Jacket by itself?

Also,I migrated my stats from the main hit point pools to the second and third pools asI use a lot of specials. Right now my main hp pools are 750/750/700 (human) with my secondaries around 450 with my armor on. I was able to buff those up a bit with Blob Candy and Bofa Treats until I had to give up Artisan and lately I've been working with those stats and seem to be doing all right.

As a Novice Swordsman I'm doing fairly decent against starting world critters using Spin Attacks and Mind Hits. I'm not taking any Quanker missions but I can handle yellows even in groups of four or five and the exp is coming in slow but sure.

Basically I'm new to the whole armor thing and would appreciate any advise people could offer.

Get buffed and use a complete set of composite. Armor is overpowered in this game...

I, like you, am rarely close enough to civilization to get regular buffs. But I do wear a full set of ubese when fighting animals. I find that a little food more than makes up for the large HAM costs. Try these foods......Gruuvan Shaal (+400 strength, 38 min.), Scrimpi (+400 quickness, 38 minutes), and good old vasarian brandi X2 (+800 mind, focus, will, 38 min.). These all stack and give a nice buff for approximately 40 minutes. Also remember, that you don't need to spam your specials to win(especially against quenkers). The armor makes it so you take almost no damage, so time isn't as important.

Overall, I used armor all the time and found it to be much more useful than without. And like I said, I rarely was buffed, just took food and the occasional muon in emergencies. Though onceyou reach master, you might not use armoras much against normal animals, justthe big stuff.Once I hit blademaster, I found that armor wasn't that important unless I was fighting big game, you may find the same thing.

Thank you for the suggestions. Just because I'm cheap I think I'll try getting by with the chest piece and pants for now. Maybe even cut back to the chest piece.

As the one poster saidI do believe that armor is quite powerful in the game but mainly because the amor that is used is mostly pretty high level stuff. The system of factories and mass production just makes it affordable to lower levels than was probably intended. It's a shame they made Bone Armor from the Artisan profession so poor against Kinetic. If it had even 40% Kinetic resists I'd proabably use a full set of that but, as it is, a couple of pieces of Ubese is giving me better protection.

If you want to go unbuffed your best bet would be just the chest piece if any.

I only use armor if I am buffed...

Bone armor sounds like it should be real strong and heavy. Great for kinetic, but rubbish for anything else. Obviously the Devs thought different

I personally hate relying on buffs or food, you need to find a good place to buy them, most vendors are never stocked, insanely expensive for a Ranger, or have half-ass quality. The good quality stuff is usually on the vendors that are empty, because every item's been sold already.

And they're not permanent, thereby requiring me to head back to town for buffs after 3 hours or take more food after 40 mins where it wears off, making it an expensive endeavor to rely on.

Armour however is as permanent as you want it to be and is a one-time expense (provided you dont wear it out within a week )

I've found it to be extremely useful in battle, especially with the warcry-destruction. You can no longer KD an opponent and keep them there, so you will take a lot of damage. Reducing this damage requires defenses through skill and/or armour. Having 72% ubese light armour means the damage an animal does is cut into 14% (50% reduction for the light armour rating, 72% reduction off of that), which makes a large difference when you fight 5 rancors at a time so to speak.

You'll have to adjust your playstyle however. I used to be a TKM and spammed all the specials I had all the time. With armour, this isn't possible anymore because your HAM costs are increased a lot. I'm now a MHS and can't spam specials without armour either, so Im used to it. (Swordsman HAM costs are quite large in itself)

Wear a full armour set and rely on your default attacks and a scarce special to take the animals down. Your secondary stats don't matter much then, just because your quickness is 1 doesn't mean you're about to be incapped. secondaries may only be wounded, not damaged.

Back in the "old days" before mounts and vehicles (when we had to level up hill and use sticks for weapons), I would understand the concept that you are too far from town. I could even understand it, somewhat,if you were saying you can't afford buffs at 8 - 10K a pop. Buthop on a bike and you can be anywhere on a planet in 10 minutes or less. A shuttle ride or twoto Theed or Cornet or one of the other heavily populated cities, and you can get buffed and be back out with 2 - 3 hours of buffed and armored ubberness. And if you always leave yourself enough time to get back to a starport or to Coronet, Theed, or the nearest major city before you log out, you are ready to find a doc when you log back in the next time, cutting down your start up time.

Foods and spices only help so much. If you figure in the down times from spices or from sitting around healing and recovering after a fight, I am pretty sure you will find that the time used there can't be much worse than finding a Doc and getting a buff. And doing the latter will usually allow you to recover fast enough that you are usually fully healed by the time you get to the next mission. And being buffed will allow you to take on higher paying missions you otherwise would not be able to handle.

If price is a problem for you, then consider that 3 easy 3k missions, a couple of 5k missions, or one 10k mission easily pays for the buffs, and, being buffed, it does not take long to blow through them to recover the money.

I would rethink that side of my strategy.

In response to the original question, i bought an entire 80% kin comp suit, and w/out buffs or sliced i can wear ahelmet, boots chestplate and gloves. In my experience, against creatures this is all you need. No matter what they do their attacks always land on the armoured areas, never the arms or legs, its always gloves or boots, so this i guess is how much you need for full PvE protection. PvP and PvNPC is a different matter altogether however...

Ps i hate composite, its so common...

The biggest thing you'll need is the Chest Plate, then maybe some pants. Helmet looks cool, but is probably uneeded. Myself, I once had a great Ubese Jacket- used it all the time. I don't think I ever got incapped wearing it, come to think of it. Anyways, I almost cried when it wore out (I shoulda fixed it, I know, but I didn't). So, probably just the jacket. Pants...maybe.

Always use armor no matter what dont listen to **edit**heads that dont know what they are talking about. Get good composite 70-90% kinetic resist for pvp and 30-45% stun for pvp. and ALWAYS BE BUFFED IF YOU ARE FIGHTING! that includes doctor buffs dancer/musician buffs and eat foods that will help you. Most weapons have high mind cost so i eat 2 +425 brandy for 40 mins and i take synth steak 45% damage reduction for pvp but for pve i just take brandy.

why not get a really good ubese chest, then buy mabari pants, gloves and helmet. Just find a master AS who is kind and will take special orders. They can make mabari with like 25% resists, almost no HAM penalties.
