Can anyone suggest the best weapons for going up the other trees, though? Or should we just stick with wooden staff/survival knife/two-handed axe?

I used a damage slice 1-handed curved sword, a damage sliced 2-handed curved sword, and a basic lance (can't remember how it was sliced) Looking back on it, I might have been better off with speed sliced weapons, but I haven't worked the numbers to tell for sure. But your weapons should be curved swords (1-handed and 2), and basic lance. Some people use Long vibro axe once they get certed for it, if you want to do this, I'd highly recomment some accuracy food.

Unarmed I used speed slice VK's.
Two handed I used the axe until I got the 2h curved cert and then I used a speed sliced 2h curved from there.
One handed I used a dagger I bought off the bazaar for the first block then used a speed sliced 1h curved from there.
Pike's are the toughest I think, I used a speed sliced wood staff until I got the basic lance cert. I used a speed sliced basic lance until the lva cert which I used until I finished.
If you cant tell, you want to use alot of speed sliced equipment in those boxes.

You can check the certs on the skill trees and look for those wepons on the bazaar. Speed sliced ones are usually cheaper and are great for grinding. Speed sliced vk's for unarmed, Curved sword for one hand and 2 hand (when you get certed for it) use wood staff then lance, then the lva when you qualify for it for the polearm tree. ( you might want to get some acc food for the polearm tree, would speed up your grind)

here is what i used... (just made master brawler last night)
unarmed- speed sliced vibroknuckler (pretty universal)
one hand- speed sliced 1h curved sword (a well made one can have great damage too.)
2-hand- speed sliced heavy axe till box 2, then a speed sliced 2H curved sword.
polearm- speed sliced metal staff. i did use a night sister lance that i picked up cheap on the bazaar to inflict DOTs then switched.
the key (as you can see) is speed. and use well made weapons. you can find them with a little dilligence and they make a big difference as you tend to do more damage.

I used a speed sliced VK for unarmed of course. For one handed, I did dagger until 1, and a good speed sliced Gaffi Stick until 4. At two handed, I used heavy axe until 1, and I think I used a speed sliced two-handed axe the rest of the way (never thought of using a two-handed curved sword since I was already almost done). Polearms was actually pretty easy for me... wood staff and metal staff until 2, then I actually used my crappy exceptional basic lance (2.0, 30-575, no dots, so at least I put some use to this) until 4.
