I'm currently a Rifle user but I suffer when my opponent gets closer than 20 meters. I just picked up Novice Brawler in order to learn some Two-handed melee skills. I figure the Two-Handed Melee will compliment the mind damage my rifle does.

As a Novice I am only certified for a Dagger (which is not two-handed). What weapon would I use to gain the proper experience for Two-Handed Melee?

Right now I have an Axe. That gives me 2 handed xp. You may look like a lumberjack, but it gives the xp. I'm looking for a new weapon, because I don't like the axe, but your most likely to find that since their the most common 2 handed weapon.

Look for a Heavy Axe in the Bazaar. If you're looking into the future, look for a Two-Handed Axe, as well. I believe there's also Vibroaxes, but I haven't seen one, yet.

Am I certified to use these weapons as a Novice or is certification just a ranged combat thing?

As a Novice, you can use the Heavy Axe. After you go up a notch, try looking for a Two-Handed Axe. You can probably use it, by then. Heavy Axes are really cheap, though. You can get one for 50cr.
