I think, correct me if I am wrong (I know you will), that brawler is the best option for combat. You can master brawler and pick the defense branches of the other melee elite professions and have an "uber" warrior. You really cant do that with say pistol. You can pick the BH pistol line and some pistoleer but that is about it. Or smuggler pistol and master Pistoleer. But are the mods you get comparable to the mods you get as a melee "guy" who has mastered Brawler, TKA and dabbled in the defense trees of Sword, Pike and Fencer? I havent done the math but I am sure someone has.

The DEVs are revamping the melee and range defenses, so we'll see how it stacks. But currently, you're looking at +170 to melee defense alone. Each elite profession has their defenses in different tiers making itaccessable tocreate a player tank. On top of that, you can also acquire each profession's ability to make mobs or players miss bygrinding the tiers with bonuses to dodge, counterattack, etc. And if you're game enough, you can invest some SP to the Defence vs. "state" (blind, stun, intimidate, etc.) thateach profession offer (making them stackable).

Ultimately, you'll have one mean and powerful melee machine.

I would like to create a character that has Master Brawler and novice medic plus all the defense of the other elites and maybe master a few of them too. I want to be self sufficient and have the ability to solo. Because of that I think I need to master TKA too. That leaves me to choose between Fencer, Swordsman and Pike. I hear the skill points used to get the def mods in pike are not worth it, could be used to gather more mods in say Fencer. If that is the case then maybe I can master swordsman too and dabble in the defensive mods of Fencer, or vice versa.
