Raph Koster on balance in SWG:

"On the other hand, we're just plain giving up on the issue of melee combat. A good ranged guy is always gonna take a good close quarters guy, and there's no getting past that. Yes, we've innvested a fair amount of time in vibroblades and stun poles and what have you, and there's skills to learn for melee, motioan captured moves, and all sorts of goodness. But really, we already know the min-maxers won't use that stuff. So it's there for those whose self-image really calls for it."

hehe, title should be Read and Weep.

I am too pissed to think straight. Time to drop the skill tree since Holocron basically said it will never be fixed.

It seems as though melee was only included in SWG in the first place so that they could increase the number of skills and professions overall. Why include a class if you don't even intend to balance it? What a joke...

I will ask about this to try and clear things up. I sent this message in and asked for a response.

Hello, I just wanted to ask a question. This post from some time back ( http://www.kanga.nu/archives/MUD-Dev-L/2001Q4/msg01048.php ) seems to be bugging a lot of Brawlers. Especially the paragraph:

"On the other hand, we're just plain giving up on the issue of melee combat. A good ranged guy is always gonna take a good close quarters guy, and there's no getting past that. Yes, we've innvested a fair amount of time in vibroblades and stun poles and what have you, and there's skills to learn for melee, motioan captured moves, and all sorts of goodness. But really, we already know the min-maxers won't use that stuff. So it's there for those whose self-image really calls for it."

Now I know that this is over a year old, but most Brawlers feel that they are being left out to dry when it comes down to the ranged vs melee issue. A lot of folks feel, and to some extent it is true, that no matter how good you are with your melee skills, any joe-schmoe with a gun is going to own you, and any joe-schmoe with a pistol and pistol whip will even beat you melee.

Do you think that there can be a happy medium reached as far as melee issues and balance? Or is there a point where you just can put melee and ranged on par with each other?

Guys,

That is an old quote. I was reading these boards when he said it.

I also remember, six months later, when he said, "Actually, I changed my stance on that. I do think there is a way to get melee and ranged more balanced." I don't have the link, the old boards are closed, but I remember him saying that.
