What are some good ranged / close combat profession combinations and how are they used most effectively for a character used 100% for combat? I'll be using this character for hunting expeditions and to set mining installations on hostile planets.

I would actually recommend Ranger and Rifleman for that.
Ranger gets all sorts of fun stuff like camo kits that hide you from creatures and NPCs (you can apply them to people in your group, too), and coupled with Rifleman you can effectively kill most creatures without being seen. Heck, you could set mining installations on hostile planets -- includingDathomir --without having to even fight.
Ranger/Rifleman was probably the most fun PvEprofession I ever had.
I'd give it a try.

Basicly you can combine any combat profs with good result, but the profs that are supposed to help each other by game design are: Fencer/Pistoleer (get dodge, attack health), Pikeman/Rifleman (get block), Swordsman/Carbineer (get counterattack) or Swordsman/Rifleman (attack mind) Pikeman/Carbineer (attack action). TKA work good with any ranged prof (get defence equity that is some dodge/block/counterattack at the same time, and can attack all HAM pools).
For the ranged profs some can also the enhanced by hybrid profs, Pistoleer with Smuggler/Bounty Hunter/Commando and Carbineer with Bounty Hunter.
Another thing to consider is damage types but my suggestion is going with the 2 professions that you like the most, also once you have mastered one profession and know how the game works changing to another is just a matter of days of grinding so try a combination and if you don't like it just change it.

ranger rifleman is great for PvE, for Pvp I would go either Rifleman/TKA or Rifleman Fencer.
