Thread: Brawling for the Masses
Hello,
Greets from Chilastra, may the Force be with you.
I've played my Trandounarmed brawler since release and am slowly working my way through the expert rank. I thought I'd make a quick post about some of the more interesting tidbits to using fists as your primary weapon.
- A brawler is a tank.
- No other profession has the capabilities to hold a mob like a brawler.
- Make sure you have plenty of health.
- Unarmed melee moves cost alot.
- 95% of my fights start out with me blinding and intimidating as soon as possible, unfortunately after they fail once or twice I have to carefully weight my options -- stay and fight (usually berzerk and cross my fingers) or run for the hills.
- I don't even bother with Warcry, yes it iseffective when it works, but **edit** it costs alot.
- Berzerk early, berzerk often.
- Waiting until you only have 250 action left to zerk is a bad idea. If you pop your zerk early in the fight, hopefully after you've blinded and stunned your enemy, you can rest easy; dealing 150-250 dmg per round makes you death incarnate.
- The downside to berzerking is that you're going to get hit. I think this could use some adjusting, like only affecting the likely hood of your health pool getting hit, rather than all 3.
Well I've wasted enough of your time, I'll wrap this up quickly.
I enjoy playing a brawler, they are a neccessary role in the combat system and while there will be nerfs,I believe thatbrawlers willremain effective and cruicial. Besides, IMHO TKM is more of a Jedi/FS character profession. If you want to really get nasty quickly, look into something alittle more diverse... use a gun!

I'll add this tid-bit:
If you are Zabrak, keep in mind you have an INNATE skill called "Equilibrium". Therefresh is 1 hour IIRC but it can be a lifesaver.
What does equilibrium do? It takes all of your HAM pools, combines the values and "equalizes" them to the same values. So when you get down to that sliver of red, hit the equilibrium and it can save your life. It's not something that you can use every fight obviously but it can mean the difference between getting that last bit needed to kill a mob vs. laying on the ground watching the mob stand over your corpse laughing.
FYI - You can find the icon listed under Ctrl-A in the "Other" tab.

Thanks for the updates - this is good info -
Question: I am about to pick my profession tomorrow (waiting for my new video card to arrive (BLAH!). I want to be a sword-fighter ... is the Brawler a good place to start? Do you feel disadvantaged versus a marksman?
What would you recommend asa race? (I don't think I want to be a wookiee.)
From a newbie ... Thanks!
Depends on how you handle frustration... It's been quite frustrating so far for me, but I'll grind it out for TKA (was TKA in Beta).
The Brawler class is in need of Balancing, and even with our complaints over the past week, we got hit with the Nerf Bat again today.
Marksmen seem to have it easier. The RISK vs REWARD is skewed in their favor atm. You just cant compete with those who can ping the mobs from afar and run if things get bad. We are too close to the mob to get away if things so sour. Also, the dmg that Marksmen are doing at the Expert Tier seems to be much more effective that what we are doing at the same level Tier. I consistently see Expert Marksman doing 200+ on their ranged attacks, when with Hand-to-Hand attacks, we are lucky to see 100s. We had a special which was giving 150s-200 but that was nerfed today.
There are some other outstanding issues that you can see in my post "TOP ISSUES with Brawler Balancing".
If you still want to be a Brawler after reading that, then here are my race observations:
Trandoshan or Zabrak are the only two real choices.
Trandoshan regen > All ... less downtime is better.
I dont like the Trandoshan look, so I went with Zabrak.
Zabrak have increased Mind pool regen, which will help when you are fighting NPC/PC that target your mind pool.
Zabrak also have innate "Equilibrium" as I posted above. I am happy with that ability as it can be a life-saver.

Why? Cause stone-cold politely recommends it.

Unarmed Brawler
I am a level 2 polearmist and i see 100 quite often w/ a combat stick ... not to mention i do 200-300 easily with /polearmhit 1
I am a human brawler. Was that a dumb choice? I have only been playing for 2 days so I can start over but I would like to know the best race and why if you could be so kind as to answer this for me. ![]()

Dont say that two loud you may get a nerf. I think most of the complaint here is being issued by "unarmed" brawlers who relied on Beserk to get us a short duration boost (i.e: over 100 hits). I dont have raw numbers but IIRC the unarmed blind/stun/hit all seem to weigh-in around 60-80dmg/hit.
