Brawler Archive
Thread: Brawler = Impotent
Let me tell you a little story, and I hope the devs are listening =)
Once their was a brawler who was not only a Pikeman but a Squad Leader with a little bit of Fencer thrown in. He had a Polearm Toughness of 26 and a total Melee Defense of 49. He used to think that was pretty good.
One day, our little brawler went to Lok with some Commandos and BH friends. He died a lot. In fact, most of the time he had to stand at the back and watch his friends play with the enemies because he was more of a hinderance to the group than a help. You see, they had a pet.
The Commandos and BHs would go up to a group of pirates or mercenaries and send their pet in. It wouldn't draw the attention of the other pirates standing around it, no, only that one singular priate would attack it while the marksmen shot it... and shot it a lot. BLAM! 2k of damage. BLAM! 3k of damage. Still the pirate attacked the pet.
Well, eventually our little brawler got tired of standing back and went up to hit one of these pirates. Oh look! Every other pirate suddenly became aware of the poor, little brawler. Still, they ignored the pet however. The brawler pushed on, and gave the pirate being tanked by the pet a little tap on the shoulder. TAP! 400 damage. Oh no... the pirate didn't like that... so he turned around and killed the little brawler in 3 hits.
The brawler cloned and returned to the hunting spot, wondering to himself why the pirate had attacked him for only doing 400 damage yet ignored the marksmen who were doing several thousand points of damage?
"Hrmm," he said, "if a pet has several thousand points of HAM and doesn't draw aggro from surrounding creatures, can never be permanently killed and holds the aggro of its target while it's owner shoots from a safe distance yet cannot hold aggro at close range for melee users to do any damage... what do I do in a group?"
A commando responded, "You give us medical experience, of course"
Our poor, little brawler can now be found dancing in the Mos Eisley cantina for tips, getting drunk, and getting anyone who will listen about how he once soloed a baby Womp Rat.
yeah, stupidly I spent all weekend playing a brawler (was going to be a Teras kasi). I then joined a Rancor Cave group on Dathomir, and it was then I realized how useless brawlers (of ANY type) really are, especially when everyone is running around with 350 foot tall pets with 50,000 HAM (slight exageration). I could basically go up to a Rancor, hit it once, it would then hit me back, and I'd have to run away and heal up and wait for the next fight, thus giving me a total of 15 Unarmed experience per fight, making for a GRAND TOTAL of 200 for 2 hours of Rancor fighting! OMG BRAWLERS SUCK!
Anyone thinking of making a brawler don't waste your time, they are totally useless in this game and are only good for getting the commando profession.
I'm sorry to hear your having such a problem with your chosen professions. I am currently a swordsman on Tarquinas and have hunted all over Tattooine, Naboo, and Endor (though I did pick my fights on Endor very carefully). On Tatt' and Nabbo, i have found that most things that are yellow or below I can handle with little difficutly. I do some part-time work as a scout so on a particularly bad fight I might drop a tranq dart on a creature to slow it down. When dealing with Humanoids the only problem i've run into is if I let them get away from me (which yes is a bit of a bother). On Endor, I was in a group with a Pistoleer and a Master Scout who has specialized in Carbine. We have some tough fights but I didn't find my damage all that lacking. I believe that with my sword I was doing around 750 to 1,000 points of damage and my hammer was hitting for around the same, some specials boosted it up to the 1,500+ mark.
If there is any way I can be of service to either of you please contact me in game and i will happily see if I can help out.

PS - oh and to clarify, my weapons are custom ordered: 2-Handed Sword and PowerHammer. I wear carry Chitin armor, though rarely wear it, and my official "skill ranking" is Novice Swordsman.
This is soo very true.
HOWEVER!!!! There is a way to at least do damage, get a small amount of experience and not die and become a hinderance to your group as a brawler. If you don't believe me...read on.
Here how it works. The marksmen will send in their pets and start pounding. Let them shoot for a little bit to get in some damage. The brawler has to do something I have properly named "jousting" (I had a lance at the time.). You don't have to be a pikeman to "joust", it's just the term I use. As the name implies, you charge the target, and run through them. The trick is when to pull out mid-charge. If you just plain run through, the mob will sometimes get a hit on you. I recommend running through 3/4s of the way through the mob and cutting left of right. NOTE! When charging, always charge in from the back. The mob will turn around, but you will have already cut to the side and escaped being hit. I recommend using slow heavy damage weapons for "jousting". If properly performed, you will charge every time it comes your turn to swing normally. This technique requires practice and timing.
In my experience, I have only done this with marksmen with no pets. I really have no idea what the factor of pets will do. Hopefully the addition of pets will help keep you alive.
Now that you have become 10 fold more useful, go out there and and joust!
Fordakyn01, first off I want to say thanks for your offer of help - we brawlers need to stick together =)
However, the problem I discussed above is not really a damage one. I can quite easily and effectively kill mobs on the starting planets and gain a decent amount of experience. Tuskens are particularly good hunting as I can live through a fight, deal a good amount of damage, and gain substantial experience. The problem however lies when you go off-world to combat bigger creatures, orharder tuskens =),and start to realise the brawler defense skills are truely lacking. But it's not just tanking ability I have an issuse with - its how pets and aggro works which renders the brawler obsolete. If a group of marksmen can use a 9k HAM pet to tank a Kamogila and blast it from a distance safely, why would they want a brawler in there group who immediately gets killed in 1 or 2 hits? The fact is that the aggro system is bias towards the marksman and enemies will immediately turn on anything that inflicts even the smallest amount of melee damage and unfortunately brawlers lack the defensive skills to tank at all at the moment. Basically the only difference between a marksman and a brawler in terms of tanking ability is 200 health.
It makes my package shrivel up, too, whenever I'm in a group with bh's and commandos, but were you using intimidate II?
Before I so much as look hard at rancors, I make sure that intimidate II lands.
Intimidate II, the other OTHER white meat!
