Don't let the certification scare you away from using them.
- With the armor penetration you do the same damage as if unarmed.
- Your attacks are faster than unarmed.
- If you use a looted pair your HAM costs are negligable.
- Crafted knucklers will be faster than looted but are more inconvenient.

Seiryuu is right on the money. VK's are definately worth using while working up the unarmed tree. The speed benefit is simply too good to pass up/

I am trying to get my unarmed 4, so you are saying that I will still benefit from the VK, even though I am not certified to use them? How is the DMG on them if I am not certified to use them?

It's about equal to unarmed unless you're Trandoshan
I lose 20 damage as a trandoshan but also hit a good deal faster.. worthy trade off =)

Yes, you will benefit from the knucklers while trying to get through the Unarmed tree.
Because unarmed has a +unarmed damage, it stacks on top of the base damage. An uncertified knuckler's base damage is pathetic, but so is a fist. All that really matters is the +unarmed damage at this skill level.
Your combat window will show the knuckler doing less, but the important thing to watch are the numbers above your target's head. You'll notice the knucklers are actually doing 25% extra which is equivalent. You can also take on light armor opponents and not lose much damage.
