What you are asking for already exists in the game, it is called intimidate and intimidate2.

The reduction to damage of your opponent can be seen as inversely that damage is the same but your "natural" armor has increased. Either way it's there. The old days before buffs and uber comp how do you think a melee dude got by?

Ipersonally think its a great idea!
The combat balance will likely be an overall balance and probably not incorporate the intrisic differences between how a combat profession works and i don't think it would need to be justified by -ve mods to hit speed as they'll still suffer the higher encumbrance of the armour.
I'm NOT suggesting a skill that removes encumbrance, but gives % decreases so a MB and MS will have lower encumbrance than just a MB who still has lower encumbrance than a non-melle profession. But these bonuses would have to come with top boxes and master boxes ONLY to prevent major abuse.

Justification for this - a melle master gets bonuses to there weapon (melle speed and defense) because they train with it (gain xp) so why shouldn't they get "better" at dealing with the encumbrances of there armour. You could argue that ranged combatants also "use" there armour but in my mind a mellee combatant actually uses there armour as a tool, parrying and blocking with it, rather than merely as a layer between impacts.

I've only just purchased my first few pieces of comp and combined with my ubese i can't wear it all unbuffed! I find this rather stupid and although i've began to buff (for xp grinding) i'm not a believer that a game should contain 'don't leave home without it' items and if i could wear the armour unbuffed and use food boasters for combat effectiveness i would rather do so!

Your solution: Use ubese.
If you die from ranged: Get comp with buffs or Ranged Mitigation.

Contrary to common belief you don't needto be buffed for a lot of things. Only high end content - DWB, Corvette, etc, is death without buffs. You can solo Mokk and Janta without buffs. You can solo rancors without buffs. Use a combo of food - here is a good example:

- Single Brandy, Single Garrmorl, Single Accaragm, Single Synthsteak.

400 + to all 9 pools, and 44% damage reduction + add 70% kinetic protection from ubese

Only ranged will pose problems, then you need to put some ranged defence food in.

No to encumberance minimzaition. Wait until combat balance - we don't want to jump to assumptions here. Analyze the situation when it comes, then adapt. Changing this now will simply enrage the ranged professions further. Melee is already good enough as it is at this moment.

The original poster was suggesting this as POST combat balance. Although instead of encumberance reduction I would rather suggest armor certification. The heavier classes who were thought of with tanking in mind will get certs for heavier armor while those with high natural defenes( like fencer) would have lighter armors to compensate for their innate ability to NOT get their asses kicked. So for example Pikeman and swordsman would have a heavier armor cert than TKA and Fencers. Some ranged classes seen as hybred tankers would also get the heavier armor certs. Like commando and BHs would be in much heavier need for the heavier armors than some of the other naturally defencive ranged classes like pistoleer and rifleman. Also since Commandos and BHs to a lesser extent in and of themselves need to be in close range just to get their specials off in the first place. (who knows in a future this may be changed and such things may not have to be implemented.) Also you have to be currently using the class's gear and such to get the armor certs to work. This needs a lot of working but I'd rather have a certification system for armor along with a whole pleathora of armor than a limited scope of armor that EVERYONE can just slide into.
