I just swapped from pistols to sword and oh.. me like! Lots of slicing and cool lookin specials. I can't speak for the higher levels, but I'm soloing stuff right now at sword 3 that I should not reasonably be able to kill, according to the missions I'm getting. And less of a skill point suck.
(Wants TC to come back online to bash stuff with sword, rawr)
If you don't mind my jumping onto this thread I was wanting to ask about the HAM costs of swordsman versus fencer. People speak well of Swordsman against creatures but most of their advise seems to start with "Get yourself buffed..." and I was curious about how well an unbuffed Swordsman would do hunting creatures?
Just a role playing thing but I play a Scout/Creature Handler and like to be away from cvilization for a long time. Heck, if fishing would relieve Battle Fatigue you might never see me in town except to put my hides on the Bazaar
. So aside from belly buffing with home cooked Bofa Treats and Blob Candy I'm never going to see any buff love.

OK IM master swordman and soon master fencer , swordman is the best profession for PVE by far and it not two bad in pvp you just need to know ur moves and ,
fencer ham cosrt for moves is higher then swordman as i can incape my self with a stun bation were as sword isnt to bad most of the time im buffed so it easy , but ive soloed a narf lair with swordman no problem
And also some jungle volitors as well
so sword is a difineta over commando as i ve being commando to and it is very broken at the moment

Well part of it depends on which swordsman/fencer weapon you use. Using specials, most Power Hammers have a health cost of around 112, so you'll see your health pool deplete pretty quickly. The 2h Curved sword has a 47 or so action cost, with a 25 health/mind cost, so it's more managable, but does less damage. No AP and low damage make fencer a pretty poor choice for PvE (Unless you're only hunting Fatctional NPCs which never seem to have armor). Most people would be surprised how effective the auto-attack for Swordsman/Pikeman is. As I leveled up in them I hardly ever used a special becuase they'd miss too often, and use up too much HAM. The AP and damage of the LVA and Powerhammer make them devistating even without using specials.
I'm not sure but I started a novice swordsman over the weekend and it works great! In fact, my tailor character Momoko had novice pistoleer so I can protect myself when I go to my harvesters (the maulers hate me.
). I discovered that a novice brawler with a single box in 2 handed swords is more effective than a novice pistoleer with a really good gun. Needless to say, I just dropped all my pistoleer and marksman.
Thank you for the information about the HAM costs. I made Master Brawler the other day but I had to give up too much else to get the skill points for it (already a Master Scout / Master Handler) and have to decide which weapon to focus on
