Thread: All ranged combat Prof. > any triple elite melee
I have a very similar template except I have only pike 0040, butadded fencer 2000 at the expense of medic.Low level medic is really not needed since the new stims require no medic skills. I also have the FS melee speed, melee defense, and ranged defense trees completed. I carry stim D's with 1100 healing that just require a combat level of 60 and can heal far better than before CU with medic 0100. Ranged combatants are difficult, but not unmanageable. More thought is involved. On an open field, a ranged player does have a better chance of winning. Its common sense. If a person is running at you with a sword and you have a gun, who do you think is gonna win? (Can anybody remember the first Indian Jones movie where its Indy vs a swordsman?) The trick for melee is to make ranged combatants fight onyour terms, which is close quarters. Get them inside if at all possible, or otherwise use terrain as an obstruction wherever possible so they can't see you and have to get close. If you are talking duels, an obvious trick is to be in close range when you accept and do a lunge immediately before they run off. Parry Riposta stance is designed for this situation as well. Basically its a CenterOfBeing vs ranged because it will give you a bonus against ranged and reflect some of the damage back at them.Whenyou get rooted,Parry Riposta is your bestoption. Remember also that many weapons are certified only by combat level. I carry a lazer rifle with a max damage of over 400. You may not be able to do any special attacks, but shooting back is better than just standing there taking shots when rooted. When fighting ranged players on a field where no terrain can be used to my advantage, I typically will put the target on follow so i am not trying to manually chase and attack at the same time - this way i can more easily lunge when I do get in range. Another trick not typically thought of is Burstrun. Most people are used to doing Burstrun to run to safety and do not think about using it to charge an enemy. Burstrun into range, knock em down, and take them out. One final thing I can think of is clothing and foods. Ranged Defense replaced Defense VS Stun on bioclothes, so its easy to get +25 Ranged Defense. There is also a new chef drink that I have found (think its called thundercloud) that adds 80+ to ranged defense for around 18min (hopefully it gets better as the chefs figure all the new stuff out). With my template, clothing, and foods, both melee and ranged defense are pushed to over 340 when holding a 2handed weapon and even higher when unarmed.
Melee players do have a distinct disadvantage in PvP, but at least have some tricks that work to their advantage. The thing you have to remember though is the CU defined roles for the different professions. Melee players are designed to tank and/or deal damage and while diminished in capacity for 1x1 PvP, are invaluable to a group in PvE.
Yeah, I hear what you say but you have to remember, the ranged players arent stupid either. They are not going to run into a tight area.
I have tried to use terrain in a city but they take a very wide arc and keep the distance. There is nothing you can do in those instances, NOTHING! and you all know it.
Anyway, thank goodness for respec.
