SWG Developer Q&A - June 21, 2005
By Julio Torres

06-22-2005 - Yes, it's another Q&A! This time, we had our resident Bounty Hunter, Darth_Infamous (aka Cradossk of Radiant), ask the questions. This not a general Q&A, but specific to the Bounty Hunter profession. The Jedi and Bounty Hunter dynamic has become a very visible portion of the game lately, so we've targeted this Q&A directly at that portion of the game.

Julio Torres, Associate Producer from LucasArts, answers our questions this time. Thank you again, Julio, for taking the time to answer our questions!

SWG Vault: With the addition of Multi-passenger vehicles, Jedi and GCW players are now able to escape combat without any danger to the vehicle or owner of the vehicle. Do you forsee offering rides becoming a "helpful action"?

Julio Torres: We are looking into this mechanic to see if it is actually fun or simply an exploitable implementation that will frustrate players.

SWG Vault: The bug that allows Jedi to enter private structures freely after combat has been initiated by both the Jedi and Bounty Hunter still lurks around. It was talked about at Fan Fest that once most, if not all, of the bugs are dealt with in the Jedi and Bounty Hunter system, work would begin on player bounties. What is the timeline for these bug fixes and the beginning of player bounties?

Julio Torres: We will be addressing these bugs throughout the next series of publishes -- please read the patch notes as they are released to follow the fixes. The implementation of Player Bounties, although extremely attractive, is not trivial. There is no exact ETA for the actual implementation of Player Bounties.

SWG Vault: Kashyyyk is currently a safe haven for Jedi, where they can intiate combat in the wide open without any relative danger from Bounty Hunters. Are any alternatives in planning that keep the quest environment intact, but at the same time keep the danger of being a Jedi alive?

Julio Torres: The planet Kashyyyk was designed for most part as an adventure planet with a directed experience for everyone to enjoy. The current plan is to keep this planet a quested story-driven planet for all of our players. There are no current plans to change the status of the Jedi there. Please keep in mind that no one can "live" in Kashyyyk -- we are not allowing houses to be built there. Everyone eventually will have to leave the planet and expose themselves to the other planets of the universe, where there is plenty of tension between Jedi and Bounty Hunters.

SWG Vault: There was talk at Fan Fest about the possibility that names and payouts of Jedi would be removed from the Bounty Hunter terminals, and instead be replaced with faction and online status. The Bounty Hunter community isn't thrilled about this possibile change because it cause unintended hunting (such as trying to avoiding guildmates or friends). But on the other side, many Bounty Hunters would be very happy if the terminals only showed online Jedi. How concrete is the removal names and payouts and replacement of faction and online status?

Julio Torres: Yes, we are currently looking into changing the way we display a Jedi's character name. Once we solidify how we are going to do that, we will share it on Test Center. We are also working on how terminals expose the online status of Jedi players, so Bounty Hunters will be able to know who is on to take on a mission. We are sensitive to the payout concerns brought up in Fan Fest and are discussing internally to see what we can do to alleviate the concerns.

SWG Vault: Will we ever see a Hutt faction that players can join similar to the Rebel and Imperial factions? There are still hints in game of Hutt faction and it could add a new dimension to the GCW aspect of the game. Many players would love the chance to work for Jabba or another Hutt as opposed to the Rebels and Imperials.

Julio Torres: Adding the Hutt faction with the other two factions is an interesting and favorable idea, but before we really concentrate on that we would like to make the Imperial/Rebel factions dynamic function at a much higher level. Once we get there and we feel the main factions are interacting well we can revisit this idea and see what happens from there.

SWG Vault: At the Fan Fest banquet dinner, we were shown a video of player capital ships. A particular scene in the video showed Darth Vader and most, if not all, of the Bounty Hunters from the Star Wars saga, which was reminicent of the scene from The Empire Strikes Back. Is this a hint that the next expasion could very well advance the storyline into Episode V?

Julio Torres: The demo that was seen at Fan Fest was produced for internal review, and we were excited to be able to share it with all of our fans to see what they thought about it. The response was overwhelming, and we are all excited about the possibilities it presents. With this said, during many forums we heard the general interest of moving the time line forward. We are sensitive to this, but we have no solid plans to share at this time.

SWG Vault: There isn't much Bounty Hunter storyline currently in Star Wars Galaxies. We have the Deathwatch Bunker and the newly added Clone Relics quest from Boba Fett. Will we ever see more content centered around the Bounty Hunters of Star Wars (such as a Bounty Hunters Guild themepark where a player is able to take missions from IG-88, Dengar, Bossk, and others)?

Julio Torres: Yes, there are Bounty Hunter events and quests that we will be adding to the game. Please stay tuned.

This is the only thing that really concerned me. Has anyone figured out why they want to take names and payouts off the terms?

I have one way scripted answers. This is about as intelligent as an infomercial. Why not address the issue of the fact that Jedi may not be able to live on Kashyyyk but they can safely log out, so whats the need for a house, and I dont care for the "quest driven planet" if tahts what they want, easy fix, you cannot gain XP on the planet. That way you can do your quests get your items badges etc, but Jedi will not be able to 24-7 AFK grind on the bridge.

Come on give us some credit how stupid do you think we are. Ps thanks for the info, but I would really have preffered if nothing came out, this is just a joke.

So true Its not working as intended.

The whole idea of an "instance"is to prevent camping so everyone gets a chance to enjoy the new experience of Kashyyyk.

It was never intended to be a safe haven for Jedi players to xp in. And this is all it really is becoming in the current form of the game.

I'm not even a bounty hunter andthe problem is rather glaring if you ask me.

I think they want to remove names off the terminals to stop griefing. Whoah ! I can't believe something like that would happen, lol. But yeah, how many times has some mark talked crazy when he got away, or some Jedi of the opposite faction is running around taking your bases, you just goto the terminal, select misson, hunt and kill, rinse and repeat. And it's BH that only hunt certain people over and over again. I think it will be fun personally, the only BH that will remain will be the ones who really enjoy the profession. All the griefing BH will /respec to something else when they find they can't hunt and grief the people they don't like.

I'm actually thinking that they want to take names off the terminals because of jedi exploiting the one on one idea by having their bh alts or friends hold their mission.

One of the only ways you can catch a Jedi on Kash, is if you do know their name.

If there was ever a statement from a game company showing a complete disconnect from the realities they created in their product, this is it. Frankly, I can't believe any representive of SOE would be this oblivious. Which leads me to think of the most likely, sinister reason for what they're doing - promoting the game as a "Jedi" game to boost sales, with this little under-the-table information that RotW provides a relatively safe haven to grind. Yes you can be a Jedi too!
