I've been chewing up armor since the CU as it decays unusually fast, especially the leggings, headpiece and chestpiece.
So I decided not to wear it anymore. And you know what? NPC marks aren't that big a deal, and with the right spice and food. I decided to invest in 200K of BE clothing, and the added healing efficiency, terrain negotiation, melee/ranged defense and Intimidation offsets the loss in Armor Protection.
In fact I went down to the GEO Caves with 3 of my friends and did fine without armor. My CM/Pistoleer friend was getting hit more with armor than myself. Pikatta Pie, Pica Thundercloud and a Duelist Macro constantly running keeps me out of trouble and my Ranged Defense is through the roof. I use Synthsteak if I get in a bind but usually I don't really have to. I've taken down Grand Canyon Krayts, Goraxes, and Level 111 NPC's in Dantooine without armor. Usually I'm running about 287 ranged defense and I ALWAYS have duelist stance on with a normal ranged defense of 537. Add in Pica and normal ranged defense is about 600-700.
This has also helped me develop good habits such as timing, when to kite, when to run, and good food/spice combos. The margin of error, especially for unarmored hunters is much much smaller.
I find the BE clothes more beneficial than hunting all the attachments on your armor. That and I have socketed BE clothes with speed, accuracy, and defensive mods. I'm more apt to use it more often as clothes decay at a slower rate.
This is just my two cents. But I no longer spend money on armor. I do however spend about 200-500K a month on chef foods.
Thoughts? I know it's almost sacriligeous to suggest that armor is _not_ that essential.
What is essential though is a SAC capped weapon

Well, if you get hit while killing krayts/etc then you're doing somethign wrong anyways...so i dont wear armor vs them either

I'm almost done with my MCH/MBH template, and I never wear armor against single mobs. My pet has 8000 effectiveness armor with Thick Skin 3, so he takes all the pounding anyway.

Having just ground up a new alt withscratch and not having any armour until level 20.I was quite amazed at my survivability having spent a 100k on melee / ranged def clothing and a crate of PSG's.
