or is it just defence against range. I know it won't deflect damage but is it giving extra melee defence?

Honestly I haven't noticed. Now that you have mentioned it I will pay more attention to my combat que. I have somewhat wondered this myself.

it gives you more melee defense when you use it so it is helping out. I can tell the difference when I use against melee, i get hit a little less and for less damage.

It gives more "Combat Defense" which is actually ranged & melee combined.
With regards to duelist stance... its actually kind of weak. It helps, but not alot. Its only +150 combat defense for 30 seconds. As opposed to say TKM CoB that is 500 combat defense for 30 seconds, or improved force aura that is 500 combat defense for 45 seconds.

I read that with Publish 19, it will give more defense against melee attacks. There is a topic floating around that stated that...but don't quote me on it.

Its apparently +250 now on TC, so when that hits Live, that'll be nice. Still not as amazing as some of the other Def Mini Buffs, but something good to have in your bag.

Won't do much to stop saber damage since the min/max range is so tight, but should help any other PvE and PvP situation.
