So far MS/BH seems to be the better option, I have more offensive power as well as the best crowd control. I have not been able to test it in PvP let alone against a Jedi yet but so far in PvE its quite fun.
I used Battle armour as it mitagate's better for "rate of fire" since I can "root" I don't need to run as much. Against my Mark (level 66) I used full BH armour and a mark 3 PSG and swapped between Proton crabine/ HP Scatter and finally the MS Renegade Pistol, The Carbine has 15m more range but the pistols seem to have greater DPS (probably because of the Pistol Stances 4 I have).
Overall I took down the Mark with out breaking a sweat but there was a 15 point level difference. I got jumped by 2 81 Kunga's which incapped me but I later took care of them both one by one.
On a side note, alot of the Smuggler specials don't seem to work but A great combo I found was Adv. Concussion shot, then Overwhelming shot followed by eyeshot and the stun/dizzy shot and then Torso shot and finish them with Adv critical hit. Aside from my action pool sinking to the bottom I didn't really worry about anything.

I'm a master BH and Master Smuggler on Tempest and a Master BH and Master Carbineer on Kauri. I can tell you that with the MBH/MS I have a real hard time staying alive during firefights in PvE. I don't PvP much but I'm sure it'd be worse. The only thing that keeps me alive is concussion shot, so I can take some npc's out of the fight till I can kill the first one. My MBH/MCarbineer can have 2 or 3 level 80's shooting at him and still be able to outlast them with just a few heals. In fact, I try to do that so I can gain more med xp for CM.
Basically, if you want to be doing much PvP or PvE the MBH/MSmuggler is probably not the way to go in my opinion. Other may have had better luck with this combo but not me. The only reason I keep this is because I started out as a Smuggler and always loved it, then went to BH and loved that too...so I became both because I didn't want to drop either.
