Thread: determining raw dps vs net dps.

I wants to discuss dps with you. I have been conducting a study of sorts over the last few weeks since I noticed something about the combat logs. We all know that the modified dps does not appear to work correctly, but I think we may just be reading it wrong. The difference is gross (raw) vs net dps.

I have a gun that has 600-1000 max damage. I am able to fire one ranged attack every sec. If I fire using ranged attack against an unarmored target of equal level, then I hit that target for about 800 damage/sec or 800 dps. Using specials increases or decreases the amount of damage. Now, say I fire at that same target with 40% armor on. My attack is reduced to 480 damage every second, or 480/dps.

Now, I noticed a new rifle I have has a 335 base dps, and a 535 modified dps, but when I look in the combat logs (verbose) I notice the damage is in the range of 1100 per ranged attack, every second. My net damage, against armored targetsis ... what do ya know, about 540 dps. That was with a rifle. I picked a pistol and a carbine, and the numbers were right on when compared to a rifle. (Not the damage, but the net damage compared to the modded dps. )

I am not the ultimate wizard when it comes to statistics, and stuff, but how do the devs calculate dps? I know what people say about what it is supposed to be calced at, but it appears that the numbers they reflect in the weapons inventory are based on some kind of assumed figure against an armored opponent, and not just the gross base damage.

Am I making sense here?

From the calculations I was doing the DPS is worked out from your speed modifiers calculated with the weapons speed modifier and the damage figures, I remember working out what effect adding x amount of speed to a template would have on the dps, but I dont believe the figure takes into account cool down timers specials types or armour resists \ defense stats.

Could be wrong.

basically, what I am noticing, at least from the logs, is that my modified dps is more in the range of 1000-1100, instead of 500-600 or whatever is mentioned in the gun stats.

The amount of damage a target takes depends on the targets armor, the stats and buffs, and mitigation.

mod dps is simply calculated as

max + min / (2*mod speed)

and has absolutely no relevence to the real game - the ONLY time this works is when you sspam ranged shot vs a CL80 non elite mark

in every other situation your dps can vary alot... depending on specials (up the dps) CL (in pve) of the target defences of the target (pvp) - also in pvp your weapon damage is divided by .7 at the very start

That is what I am saying though. The modded dps as the details lists it is not correct.Themod dps of the rifle I just bought is alot higher than the details specify. Modded dps 535. pfft. Yea right, I am hitting for 1100 per sec according to the combat logs. (My default attack is ranged).

Mostly my hunting has been pickets/bols. I make the base calculations though when shooting anything that has no armor. In this case it was a charitable wookie. lol. The 1100 damage hits are also recorded when hitting a lair, and also the same for the healing crystals in mels camp.

As I said. I am looking for raw damage. No armor, mitigation, yada yada... just plain pure raw damage against an unarmed target.

it doesnt work that way - let me explain

PvE targets have no "armour" as such the damage you do is entirely dependant on combat level - over a range of 30 CL around your current CL your base damage (ranged shot) varies from max to min.

The exact range over which thi svaries depends on your accuracy - if you have 0 acc then its max dam at 15 CL below yours and min at 15 CL above - with 200 acc its max dam at 11 or more CL less than you and min at 19 more than you. so to hit at eaxctly your base dps you need to find a pve target at the right combat level.

your example of shooting crystals means you hit for MAX dam - hence your dps seems to be 2x your mod dps

shout me your acc number and ill tell you whjat CL target you will hit for your exact dps

eg acc = 0 - youll dps at a CL 80 target

acc = 200 youll need a level 84 target

shoot a CL86 non elite mob (if you can find one) then and you will hit dead on your mod dps with ranged shot...

Even ranged shot doesn't cycle as fast as your modified speed though.

So in essense what you are saying is that anything less than cl86 and I will hit them close to my max damage. Which sounds about right. I hit right about 900 against a picket with ranged shot.
