I wasa BH a long time ago, grinding back to it now (wasted my /respec on MCH to try it and hated it). You used to be able to get good invest. xp from helping blow up a base (can't remember what it was called) and I got to thinking with all the PvE bases all over this might be easier then just doing missions. I looked at the post-CU guide and didn't see any mention of this.

Has anyone done this? Is it a viable alternative or will I be spending more time hunting bases then I would hunting marks?

Sure you can still do this, was doing this a week ago for invest xp. Take a full demolition team with you though or a jedi who can cloak and pull all the npc's away (easiest way, can do each base in less than 10 mins)

Thx for the advice...thats kind of what I was thinking...I also see a LOT of bases on my server that have no NPCs...so thought those might be easy targets...Now, do I need the entire demo team to get to my point or could I walk into one of these abandoned ones and just do it?

No the abandoned ones do not have the uplink terminals to jam. They are non-player bases and cannot be destroyed, trust me I have tried lol.

Unless you have a Jedi with you to cloak and take the agro (they follow him/her away from the base giving you time to jam the uplink) then you should take at least one or two high lvl friends and one of your faction's forward outposts and at least one turret.

Set up the outpost with the entrace facing thier base as close as possible then either you or a friend draw the enemy's NPC's toward your base. This in effect starts a battle between your base's NPC's and thier's making it easier to clear the way into the outpost. Just keep killing them until you have got rid of them all (including the ones inside)and enter the base unhindered to jam the uplink terminal (small rectangular and yellow, can be found in different rooms each time). You can take the whole demo team if u like for the fun of it.

I hope this makes sense... if not I'll post a step by step later on, not got time cos I'm goin out to the pub lol
