Thread: Differences Of M.Carbs & M.Rifles
I'm curious what some people, that HAVE tried out both, find to be the main differences between Master Carbineer and Master Rifleman.
I always liked Carbines because I just felt they had this nastier style than the other professions, but I'm wondering if the damage output of Rifles is higher enough to make it that much better...
To be honest, I'm still trying to figure things out with the different professions, Post-CU.
I know that Carbs allows me to wear Battle Armor and that's a plus for me (Otherwise I'd have to grab another profession to get that cert... probably Doc or CM).
So, taking Carbs allows me to have the Battle Armor cert and opens up either taking a profession that grants the recon cert or any other profession, as I don't care so much about wearing the recon armors. However, if I took Rifleman, it would force my hand to take another profession with a Battle Armor Cert (Mainly for when I want to play a little Storm Trooper RP-ing).
Anway, not looking for people to tell me what to do, just looking for what you find to be the major differences of these two professions... how the damage/defenses/specials compare... not just in the numbers, but just how it all plays out.

That last note is interesting to me, as I just assumed that headshot had a higher damage mulitplier (I still tend to think of the Pre-CU moves and I remember all-too-well how headshot worked back then).
I've been a Master Rifleman and a Master Carbineer pre-CU with different toons, but that was all a very different day and different game.
Everyone has made nice points, and in the end it seems like my choices come down to... "Do I want to be able to use a T-21 (Or Possibly Proton Rifle) or use my MarkII E11 (Or Proton Carbine).
And, yes, I do plan to carry and use an assortment of weapons for different jobs (That's what I always loved about the old master marksman requirement and I'll continue to use what is available to us).
No doubt though... BH is a great base to go with any of the ranged professions.
I guess it's going to be mostly a choice of style...
I think I had some fear in me that things were still more like the Pre-CU days and that I might make a very bad choice.
Honestly, with a MBH, MC, Pistols 0003, Medic 0020 I just got wiped out by a double gold chevron Mark...
I believe I have A LOT to learn.
(I've figured my toons out on Kauri and now am working on my Tempest Character again... so, It seems I'm perpetually a noob these days)

With MBH and another Ranged Mastery (with some SEA's), you can use a Pistol, Carb, and Rifle regardless. Heck I use a Pistol right now with only xxx3 Pistolsan my modified speed on it is like 1.2 lol.....no slice or PU yet. If I was to drop Rifles and go Master Carbs I can still use my nice ALR's almost the exact same, my accuracy/defense/speed would slighty go down but that is why IMO MBH is one of the best professions in game. The best foundation you can have when building your template.
but to answer the original question, I'm M.Rifles and unless you like being prone+at least 20m away to do the most damaging attack....you're waisting your time. There are much better crowdcontrol specials in Carbs/Pistols and I believe Headshot is actually weaker than Carbs/Pistols damage dealing special. I know Critical shot does more damage than Headshot (that's without a critical bonus too). The only real draw for me to Master Rifles is the abilitiy to go undercover and the Recon armor. If it wasn't for those things I would have dropped Rifleman for Pistols or Carbs.
Yes, but if you have carbined defenses and hold a rifle, you will suddenly have way less defense...

i think proton rifle is considered a heavy weapon
correct, but a proton carbine is not
I find them to be pretty balanced... carbs little faster less dmg.. rifles little slower more dmg.
To be honest they are very comparable.
I took carbs because when I tested both carbs just fit my templete better.. I am MCM and have to get close for my stuff so the speed difference and the run and shot of carbs helps. (pistols just too little dmg for me)
However if not MCM A big differce is range.. while 15 meters may not seem like a lot.. get a jedi that goes lake crossing out to 60 m...when you have a carb.
Also 15 meters while snarred is a few extra shots.
Choice is yours ... balance carbs.... dmg rifles
