Thread: FOTM

Recently, within the past few weeks, I have been called a flavor of the month gamer and that I will prolly cry if they ever nerf this profession. I have been a TKM since late October, early November. Since I have been a TKM for a good period of time, I was quite taken back with this statement. When does an experienced TKM stop being a FOTM and start being someone who has started this proffession becuase he actually loves it and will stick with it long after they nerf it?

I really have no point to this thread other than to get something off my chest. I cant remember what the guys name was who told me, nor do I remember the exact wording of the statemtent, but it gave me a slap to the face when he said it. Telling me that I made a class just to be uber and not to have fun. I will probably never drop this class, I will do everything I can to keep this class if I decide to go on the holo grind, and it will be the first profession I pick up if I do happen to drop it.

I dont really want an answer, mainly becuase I really dont have a question, but I would like maybe a response or two from some other long time TKM's and see what they have to say or if they have had similar experiences with this sort of thing.

I have always belived it is the actions of the teras kasi that set him/her apart from the cookies. The way he chains his moves. Does he use his brawler moves still? Does he only use KD2 and Hit3? These are all questions that can be answered to set you appart from a cookie cutter or a FOTM. A good teras kasi will know when to lower defenses, or wail on the opponent. To go toe-to-toe, or to withdraw and find another way around that 80% kenetic armor.

There really is no way to tell you a straight answer on the board. The only way is to go answer these questions by the way you fight, if you know your proffesion, and are a true master of tecnique then you will know if you are a FOTM or a true Teras Kasi Master.

Thanks man, I feel much better from that response. I do see a lot of tk's just spam hit3 and end up taking a dirt nap becuase the other person hasa little medic. Now, I'm not saying there arent situations where you need to use hit 3, but most of the time, people's mind pool are so low, a few headhits will do the job much quicker.

pikeman is the only combat profession that isnt FOTM, so dont worry about it when people call you that

Don't worry we won't be FOTM when carbineers get fixed

People complain that we can KD dizzy a single target, but Carbineers will soon be able to KD dizzy multiple targets while at range!

also keep in mind that this jackarse just learned the term FOTM. this is evidenced by his using it nearly 3 months after everyone desided that TK even WAS a Flavor of the Month.

somewhere, i cannot remember where as i try to visit the boards EVERY DAY, but somewhere here in the TKA forums is a thread that contains the quintessence of the Flavor Of The Month attitude. the post began with someone saying they just reached TKN and they were loving it. it continued with a few 'congratz' and 'good jobs' from other TKAs and then a troll appeared from no where just to say 'don't you know TKA is old news? template defence stacking is in' at first i thought it was a joke...it HAD to be right? but then i looked at his sig, with the defencive template stack layed out for all to see, and i nearly busted a gut laughing at this fool.

i have to agree with the others who have said that it is in fact the WAY you play your profession, the manner in which you approch your confruntations, the tactics you use, the thought process you take into battle and the honor (or lack there of) that distinguish you from a fool who took up the profession to win fights.

personally it amazes me to see TKAs who do not use the good old fasioned Intimidate / Stun/ Blind combo in PvE. it is still AMAZINGLY effective, yet the FOTMers see ONLY Dizzy / KD2 / Hit3

Sorry no, you are flavor of the month if you joined TKA just because of the pure fact that it got a big boost and is now very good. That defines wether or not you are FOTM. You can be good at tka, but if you jumped on the wagon just because of the patch that added like 80 base damage, and fixed hams... then its just like the rifleman who did the same. FOTM. Youve been a tka since october, the patch was awhile later, so therefore you are not FOTM. Or maybe there are those who jumped in after the patch, but not because of the huge boost, but because they thought unarmed would be nice to have. those are not FOTM.

So FOTM = Flavor of the Month = Bandwagoning the latest boosted profession. Like you see in rifleman, all of the sudden there are 8000 riflemen, and why? because they all at once thought it looked good? No, because they would do the most damage with it, and more likely to win a battle with it. That is fotm. If you picked it up for the boost, then drop it if it gets nerfed back to how it used to be, you = fotm, otherwise youre probably not.

EDIT: I have had TKM since around early October as well.

lol...yes I do defense stack. Is this bad? I dont think so. Dabbling has been in the game for a reason, and that reason is for people to create a more personlized character. I did it also to be more effective in both pvp and in pve. And if you fulling read my post, you would have realized that I've been a TKM for about 5 months now and no I didnt just pick up TKN =P. FOTM has dated back to when I played DAoC and when everyone jumped on the shadowzerk bandwagon, the the berserker one, then the inf, savage, chanter, whatever. I didnt "just" learn this term. It is true though that I have just recently gotten fencer and I have completed my defense stacked template.

Though I can try to defend my reasons for defense stacking, I cant change your opinion of me.I do still agree with you and the original response to my first post in that whatseperates those who just pick up tk and those who actually know and love this profession ishow they fight.

Defense stacking is not bad, if its for customization, but the fact is it kicks your ass almost all the time. saw a defense stacker with rifleman kiting about 12 guys in GCW just yesterday, took out like 5, but never got a chance to DB. Defense stacking is not customization. Dabbling may be, but you shouldnt be able to dabble in 3 profs and beat the hell out of a master of one, using his weapon, when you only have 2 tiers of that profession. Masters are supposed to stand out.

Edit: BTW im enjoying this post, nobody is cussing anyone out yet.

So what about someone like me, who started playing this game in late January? I joined after the boost, but being relatively ignorant of what profession was "uber" and which were gimped, I started with pistols, didnt like it, switched to rifles, still didnt like it, and migrated my way to TKA, and am loving it. Im a "post-boost" player, but I would hesitate to call myself a FOTM because Im not really doing this to be uber, its more about having fun and not spending 3 minutes out of every 10 recovering my mind (stupid headshots suck up mind points like its going out of style) makes my playing more enjoyable... The real problem for me, is that Ive seen some fencers out there, and they look like theyre having a lot of fun... I think that will make me into a FOTM-Stacker if I pick it up. Its so stupid that I have to curb my desires so that I wont be called names.

Also, Soulchicken, reread NeoEcks' response. He was supporting you. Hes calling the guy who was blasting you a jackarse, not you

I wouldn't worry about about what people call you. Just do it because you like it. I've been a rifleman for long before they got the love patch and bug and that makes them "uber" but I don't care what people say about me. I play what I play because I want to play that way not because of what someone else thinks I should play.
