Thread: Interesting question from THEM.....

This is a serious question, how much of this game utterly relies on the Star Wars name and not on actual playability, and content?

Just a poll, let's say this was a game with an alpha class (like Jedi) very similar, still sci fi ish, the cities and game play and crafting the same. Except every Star Wars reference and character replaced with non Star Wars.

I know I wouldn't have stayed this long, and the sad thing is even what little Star Wars feel is left is barely keeping me here since I have nothing to do in game.

Now, the reason I got into SWG was to RP, not to pwn j00 n00b, which seems to be the current attitude. I grew up with SW from opening day 77 to present. Of course my favorite character was Fett so I jumped at the chance to RP such a character. To bad there is very little RP in this game, otherwise it would be great. I have to say the main thing keeping me ingame is SW. This is the only online game Ive ever played and really have no intrest in any others. Whats your take?

i agree to an extent..im an avid SW afficionado (spelling..lol..too early) and the name originally attracted me..then i found myself entrapped in the gameplay and socalization..to me the game is fun...yes i do enjoy laying a whooping on ppl from time to time..but with the exception of my occaisional duels with guildies and soon to be jedi hunts..i play more for the PvE side of it..the exploring and tha comraderie whilst on hunts

i commend you for having the balls to post this ... many fear revealing this attitude to the public ....i too play this game because its star wars ...i love star wars ... but lets not forget even with its problems it does have some awesome advantages over other games ...

its graphics ... i have tried out other mmorpgs recently .. just out of curiosity .. and NONE of them ran as well on older hardware with as good graphics as star wars ... the graphics in this game are beautiful ... and yet .. you can still sucessfully run it on older hardware without a hitch ...now many complain about glitches or lag or whatever .. me?, ive never experienced much of this at all .. everquest 2 which was a BEAUTIFUL game and i tired it for a while in a friends account, had to be set to the lowest graphics settings to run decently and still suffered from lag and horribly delayed battle ...

the PVP in this game is awesome .. top notch ... on par with every other mmorpg out there ... even with all its faults the GCW is more enticing and easier to become immersed with, then any other games withtwofictional factions fighting for whatever ... horde vs whatever or freeport vs qeynos .. the GCW the galactic civil war is something we all grew up with and we all know the emperor and vader too well .. and we all know those underdog rebel pilots and generals ... its very easyto RP in this game ... just pick the right server ..and right people to play with ....

content .. some of its great ... the only problem i see here .. is the low level content .. and the way storylines progress ... the low level content sucks im sorry to say ... you go on quests to kill uninteresting creatures youve killed millions of times to gain XP for .. and you get JUNK rewards ...and the way the quests advance are lack luster as well .. you go to the starter NPC .. go to a WP .. kill a mob come back get a reward ... ( im talking about the majority of the quests you find within the city) if they offered awesome and helpful loot to newbs ( even substantial amounts of money)they would be 1000 times better ... i realize not every quest in the city can be super deep .. but at least give us awesome rewards ...

kashyyk was definitely a step in the RIGHT direction in relation to this .. but i think a total quest revamp would be awesome .. purge monotonous boring quests and offer some spice to others ... i would love it if the devs went to some cities and spiced up NPC quests... even the themeparks themselves are kind of boring ...

but not ALL the original quests sucked i did find some very fun ... ( one was escourting musicians in entha to safety and at the end i got one of those piano things) that was fun as heck ..even though it was simple as heck ) but one way they could have spiced that up .. as an example was after you completed the quest and got the band together .. if they started playing a show or something and you could listen on .. that would have been fun!!!

the thing is .. with the constant struggle to balance classes for PVP and fit jedi into the game .. the devs dont have time to work on these quests and such ...and most of it is our fault ... people posting in the forums crying for this and that threatening to quit if this isnt changed or that ... itforces devs to work on BS and uses up all their time

If SOE was going to create a PvP (everyone is civilian or spec forces) and RP (noJedis) server, I know about 100 persons who would create or reactivate their account immediately.... a pity it will never come

To OP: Back at launch, especially on Kettemoor, you would have had a HUGE comunity to RP with. I was very close to joining Shadow Clan, who RP'd rodians, and spoke only in Huttesse! It was soo cool. I wrote my bio to coinside w/this on my toon. IMO the people that did group up with swg from 77 to present (especially mature ones) have all but been pushed away. The target market of the game has changed, and to a much younger crowd.

its graphics ... i have tried out other mmorpgs recently .. just out of curiosity .. and NONE of them ran as well on older hardware with as good graphics as star wars ... the graphics in this game are beautiful ... and yet .. you can still sucessfully run it on older hardware without a hitch ...now many complain about glitches or lag or whatever .. me?, ive never experienced much of this at all .. everquest 2 which was a BEAUTIFUL game and i tired it for a while in a friends account, had to be set to the lowest graphics settings to run decently and still suffered from lag and horribly delayed battle ...

Seriously? I have always been under the impression SWG (somewhat widely known too) has one of the worst rendering engines in any modern game. It apears very flat, textures look to be 'pasted' onto objects etc. I'm not saying it looks bad, IMO you are really overating how the game looks. EQ2 is a graphical marvel (i have seen alot of people not like the 'plastic' look the toons have, which I can see/agree with) but it is a resource hog. I'm an Overclocker and big hardware nerd, so it is hard for me to coment on how well either run on older machines. SWG lags WAY more then EQ2, I can't tell you the last time I had someone 'slide' 50m+ away from me, or ruber band. Don't confuse youre hard drive crunching like mad and youre computer bog'n for lag.

the PVP in this game is awesome .. top notch ... on par with every other mmorpg out there ... even with all its faults the GCW is more enticing and easier to become immersed with, then any other games withtwofictional factions fighting for whatever ... horde vs whatever or freeport vs qeynos .. the GCW the galactic civil war is something we all grew up with and we all know the emperor and vader too well .. and we all know those underdog rebel pilots and generals ... its very easyto RP in this game ... just pick the right server ..and right people to play with ....

No PvP is 'awesome' when there is an Alpha class involved and itis far from top notch when 1/2 (if not more) are not really compete'n in any fasion (combat class wise, although it is getting better). PvP was awesome back in the day when no one had armor on and crappy weapons, fights where decided by tactics not who brought the most glowing bats. I play on Kettemoor (official RP server) and there use to be RP'rs arounds, I'm sure they are still there, but are VERY few and far between. IMO the imaturity of the game has frightened most/if not all of them off. That and honestly most (generallizing here) RP'rs are not really into PvP. Alot of PvP poons (read - the problemed ones) hide behind RP as an excuse to act like an ass.

content .. some of its great ... the only problem i see here .. is the low level content .. and the way storylines progress ... the low level content sucks im sorry to say ... you go on quests to kill uninteresting creatures youve killed millions of times to gain XP for .. and you get JUNK rewards ...and the way the quests advance are lack luster as well .. you go to the starter NPC .. go to a WP .. kill a mob come back get a reward ... ( im talking about the majority of the quests you find within the city) if they offered awesome and helpful loot to newbs ( even substantial amounts of money)they would be 1000 times better ... i realize not every quest in the city can be super deep .. but at least give us awesome rewards ...

Content? lol There is some, but even the 'good' content we have seems half assed and is perpetualy subjectedhalf baked ideas. Story lines? Nothing in game right now fits the timeline we 'should' be in. The 'monthly arch' stories lasted what ? 3 months, and even then they did not come out on time, and where just droped with little/no explanation. I can't even imagine trying to start new in SWG since the CU. The cards are so stacked against you. There is almost zero reward for any loot/pick up quest you get. Quest variety, well we don't even need to go there.

kashyyk was definitely a step in the RIGHT direction in relation to this .. but i think a total quest revamp would be awesome .. purge monotonous boring quests and offer some spice to others ... i would love it if the devs went to some cities and spiced up NPC quests... even the themeparks themselves are kind of boring ...

Even Kash quests, at least to me (and the planet as a whole really) reeked of amutures trying to mimic a SWG - EQ2 inspired quest area. There is no kinda boring about it, quest in SWG are either so easy you crank it out in 20min....or so stupid hard it takes a team glow bats and experinced people to even attempt (DWB)....there is little/no middle ground.

but not ALL the original quests sucked i did find some very fun ...

Something creative? You signed up with the wrong dev team. This game used to have color, it is so watered down now it is some odd dull shade of gray. Which you hint at in youre next paragraph.

the thing is .. with the constant struggle to balance classes for PVP and fit jedi into the game .. the devs dont have time to work on these quests and such ...and most of it is our fault ... people posting in the forums crying for this and that threatening to quit if this isnt changed or that ... itforces devs to work on BS and uses up all their time

Nail on the head here. I had a post trying to explain this...it got deleted and earned a couple days banned from the forums. The Dev team has put their balls in a jar on the mantle, and for far too long. They have stuck to their guns on next to nothing. Not only is the 'forum comunity' WAY to large of a committe to acomplish anyting, but we are as a whole, entirely too immature /cough and to young /cough (that is the real sore point from my exiled post) to get the job done.

Even from youre post Thassk, you talk up the game, but there is a hint of "if it was not star wars, I would not play", at least it seems that way to me.

i made fun of everquest people, DAOC people, etc etc... FPS games and RTS games only for me, MMO is only for looser.... then i heard about SWG.

what started with such high hopes has seriously dwindled into impending doom. without battle fatigue, and with the current loot trade, there's no incentive for the hard core roll player to sift through all the mindless "dood, u need to be j3deye r els u sux0r" and endless grind... i had my template where i wanted it in a week of creating a new char post cu. then it got really boring because all there was left to do is help new people find out that there's more to their fun than the maxdamage stat.... suddenly realizing i'm he;ping someone who i will just think is a complete ass as soon as they go "glowey" and start "trading xp" and all the other things the "cool people" do now.

what i would really like to see is a player bounty submission. this would be specifically for stupid names. there would be 2 kinds of stupiud names:

a name blatantly ripped off from either Star Wars or popular culture.

a name thatmay be more subtle, but is obviously just some added punctuation to make a popular phrase or term already taken into a new unique name.... or it's jst completely vulgar and aimed at offending someone (ie, ya'wanna belowme).

i think this would be the first step in the right direction, as you could see bounties on CL1 characters, and possibly as soon as the bounty goes out on them, a system prompt could give them a 5 minute amnesty to change their name.

why do i think this is a step in the right direction? chronic jack asses in game can usually be spotted a mile away simply by their name... and honestly, the time and effort in simply comming up with a decent name speaks something towards your investment into your character. my hopes would be in frustration after having to change their names 10 times, they give up on the game all together. as for using this system for griefing, having a CSR needing to review, and only 1 player bounty able to be issued by a single player each week may help. i don't know, it's seriously a pipe dream, but the CSR's could do it themselves if they got off their asses from doing whatever it is they do (besides not knowing much about the game).

lastly, i'd like to see the bounty profession be an off shoot of jedi, where you train in specialties like jedi that truely makes you a superior character, and an honest match for a jedi. another profession you have to unlock and grind.... rather than having to always be on your toes to hope you catch a jedi off guard, while the jedi pretty much walk care free and open like they will never get taken down (which is correct 9 times out of 10). every jedi i know turns around and makes their extra character a bounty hunter after starting on padawan.... i wonder why that is....

some people obviously don't get out much.

I would k inda like to see the all time PvP thing as well. Might get in on some PvP without a million jedi around for once haha. But to do this i think they'd kinda have to take some ideas from WoW IMO like the Terrorities..have like rebel areas where imps or whatever in there can only be attacked first and then neutral where whichever could attack etc...just my opinion...

Then again i'd like to see all the good thingsfrom WoW and all the good things from this game combined to make this the Uber MMo...and Star Wars theme at that.

People are mostly playing cuz it's star wars. No I would never play another game that had 1 single alpha class. It ruins any type of PVP. There is no more anchorhead VS bestine battles because of Jedi and really any other kind of overt pvp. If this was some other game, I'd have quit long ago.
