You can either carry 2 sets of armor or just get a good set of Faction armor with high kinetic and decent energy, and wear a PSG. I wear a set of Rebel faction armor with 7100/5100/5200 protection, works fine for any NPC. Only bad part is that I have to stay combatant, which can be a pain when the mark resides in enemy controlled cities. I find it more fun, to be honest... I had a fight in Mos Ethna a few days ago where the Imp NPC's were attacking both me and the mark... crazy shootout but I still wiped the floor with them all.
I have no problems at allwith the NPCs with Msmuggler / MBH / medic 0020. Keep track of how much you heal for, and don't heal unless you have taken at least that much damage. Conserve your mind and you shouldn't have a problem. Also if you have any combat slows, use them. If I'm good about using smuggler's low blow, I only have to heal two or 3 times during the fight. Knock them down whenever you get the chance, I usually knock them down right after I refresh duelist stance, put in a quick adv critical while they are down, then put on low blow once they get back up.
If you find that you can't heal for enough, get a BE medical effeciency shirt or bandolier like stated above, and get a med droid. Group with the med droid and stay near it, you will gain healing power even when it's incapped. I have a med/combat/repairprobot that I use for the NPC targets, works like a charm. Doesn't do a whole lot of damage, but it does help make the fight shorter.
If you find one that likes to do area attacks, drag him near some local wildlife and they'll join in the fight, just be careful not to use the area attacks yourself or the wildlife will turn on you.
