Thread: How dps really works and what to look for when buying a weapon.
Myth: The best weapon you can use is based on your dps
Dps in actual game play is based on 2 things.
1) Your modified speed.
2) The attack move used.
If you are like me, and use torso and adv. critical or any special besides adv. quick draw for pistoleer (1.0 sec), the fastest you can fire is 1.7 sec., regardless if your speed is faster.
Why? Re-fire special times:
Adv. critical = 1.7sec
Torso = 1.9 sec
Imp. Underhand = 1.7 sec
Imp. Confusion = 1.9 sec
Imp. Eye = 1.7 sec
Basically, what this means is: even if you modified attack speed is down to 1.0 (lowest) with your weapon, if you use these special shots you still have to wait 1.7 or 1.9 seconds to fire again.
For proof: fire a torso shot (1.9) and watch the refresh timer on your tool bar, then fire you basic shot (1.0 sec) and watch. You will see refresh timer is based on the shot you just fired, and that basic refreshes .9 sec quicker.
What to look for in a weapon?
I would recommend getting a weapon with the following stats:
A modified attack speed in your hand of 1.7 - do not aim for lower or else wasted (remember for slicing)
Your own stats may vary, but a weapon with speeds of 2.65 gives me a modified speed of 1.65. About perfect for the 1.7 players should aim for. (Note 2.65 is what I get with a +34.65 % dmg and + 16.58 % spd pup on 2.26 non-modified weapon speed, so if your going to use dmg pup take that into consideration).
Once you figure out how high of speed you can have and still be modified to 1.7 get the highest damage and the lowest sac.
I see weaponsmiths aiming at making weapons that cap at 1.73 speed: this makes the weapon look awesome for dps and gets high sales to players who do not know better.
However, for me, a 1.73 speed with my modified stats is 1.07 speed. Basically I have wasted tons of speed. - .67 seconds worth, which is a lot that could have went elsewhere when weapon was built.
I say this to help my fellow hunters to understand weapons so that they can save some $ get the best one for there character (a common question).
Nice post anarch. I, like most folk I think, had already figured out that dps was kinda meaningless, but your breakdown of the speed stat is verry useful, and well worth bearing in mind when going gat shopping.

Very true. Unfortunately Many master weaponsmiths know exactly what you need and are willing to make the weapons for you one at a time but will not make factory runs of "optimal" weapons" because the community (of ranged weapon users) as a whole fails to see the bigger picture and inists on max speed- Just like in the olden days max damage was the "indicator of qulaity"
Just remember--
Get it sliced BEFORE you biolink
Powerup AFTER slicing.
For your best bet...bring a simple toolkit and *here's the toughie* the Illegal Core booster with you.
