Thread: A theory on Jedi Rarity and the Devs

This is not another post on how to make Jedi rare, or change the any profesion. This is just a thought based on observation. Considder the number of bugs and exploits discovered while Bounty Hunters have been hunting Jedi. Maybe it was Jedi running into the water so we couldn't attack. AFK Macroing on the rooftop. Running into a house after being attacked. The /Duel thingy. Let's face it - if there is a design flaw or bug in SWG that can be exploitable, there is a high chance a Jedi or Bounty Hunter will be the one to discover and/or exploit it.

In many games there are bugs and exploits, and they get fixed - as long as the devs are able to track down where in the code the problem is. Developers (I do program professionally) place a higher priority on a bug that is repeatable to one that happens ocasionally, and place a higher priority based on the severity. So a crash bug that happens to 2% of the game population would get fixed before a repeatable issue like a Jedi running into a house and being attacked. If an issue has some form of workaround, a fix gets bumped to later while issues with no workaround get moved up in the queue.

Now, imagine if the Jedi actually were rare, like 1% of a server's population. As Bounty Hunters, we wouldn't have had much of anyone to hunt. The number of bugs and exploits discovered would have been slower (we might still be in the Feign Death or Rooftop Macro days) becasue there would have been less examples of it.

I think the Devs knew that some of the most aggresive players would become either Jedi or Bounty Hunters, and those are people that find exploits and bugs. If there is an UBER template for a Jedi, it will be found and the Devs can figure out how to fix it. If there is some FOTM for a Bounty Hunter hunting Jedi, it would only be found if there were lots of Jedi to hunt so that one template would be able to stand out above the rest.

So my theory is that as less and less issues are found, and there is greater balance between Jedi and Bounty Hunters in terms of one profession never being a hands-down winner then the devs will make Jedi rare.

Shh, hurry and remove that! It's too intelligent, they'll start using that as their reasoning!

Well, based on history, the devs will pick a some means that a very vocal portion of the Jedi comunity will hate. The devs will probably offer a respec period for those people that used to be jedi and are about to lose their status, and thevery vocal portion of the Jedi comunity will threaten to quit, and it will seem like every Jedi plans to quit. Then the devs will probably come up with a NEW way so that someone can start becoming a Jedi that a minimum of 2 years and is so difficult that most wont break into the Jedi path for 3 years. More people will threaten to quit, and during this time the devs willmake the Jedi stronger. Since there are less of them, it will be harder to notice the change. Then after a while the Devs will make the entry requirements easier, and there will be a flood of new Jedi. (say springtime, new Jedi along with the new birdies and butterflies) and then reset the prereqs. The Old Jedi will be thankful there are newbs in their ranks, becasue the BH will hunt the Younglingsinstead. Yet more complaints about not being balanced, and the Devs start setting the Jedi powers back to the "ballaned" settings, but not all at once...one publish at a time.

no the reason the game got more carebear and jedi got so easy to obtain was because of the eq devs they brought in, in my opinion at least
