Bungie is a rarity among video game developers in today's age I must say...

At any rate:

I agree that there is some twitch involved with RPGs...its primarily with knowing when and where to haul your butt out of a conflict (unless if you play Final Fantasy I think...). But if you're playing something similar to KOTOR...many a time, not just standing in one place like a mindless zombie saved my butt too many times to count! Same applies with SWG too..

KOTOR and NWN are not "true" RPG. RPG's are Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger. It's more based on strategy of fighting, then running around and ambushing etc. All of those factors are made up in different ways (pre-emptive strikes etc)

Bleh, you role-played as Revan. It is a game. It is a Role-playing Game in my book

Maybe it wasn't set up like the traditional RPGs...but it still was an RPG nevertheless

Edit: Hah...I owned a page! *evil cackle*

Halo=....

Killzone=Good

I dunno Halo just doesn't do it for me.I've breifly played Halo 1 and Halo 2 and I really didn't want to play them anymore. Nor does it look all that interesting. It's to shiny clean and perfect. Yea the Graphics are good, but I'm sorry it just doesn't pull me in. Plus if I do get such a game it's gonna be on the console, where you can truley experience that action and I don't have the Xbox and their god forsaken controller.

Now Killzone, is cool. Graphic wise it ain't so great. It could of been, but I think it's so big it's too much for the PS2 to render or something bla bla. The AI is challenging, you cannot just run at 20 MPH and go bang bang bang! The Helghast will attack differently and respond differently to your actions. Plus they are tough they take about as many bullets to kill as you. I can't really describe it. Also the enviorments are gritty, cloudy, and the urban enviroments rock.

In the game you regenrate health but up to a point otherwise you have to find a health pack. You can only sprint so far. Certain characters can do different things. Like Rico the guy with a Chain Gun with a Missle Launcher mounted on it, is the tough guy. He's slow, but basically a little walking tank, however he cannot climb ladders like the rest.

The good news is a new and really awesome looking version is coming out on the PS3.

Anyways personally I'd rather see a movie of a Killzone.That would be cool. But I'm sure the Halo movie will be good.

I dunno I'm weird. I guess games like Medal of Honor Frontline, Killzone, Star Wars Rogue Squadron (Not Rebel Strike), Star Wars Bounty Hunter, and Mercenaries are games for me.

One cannot say that RPGs must be fantasy-based. An RPG can be based in any time/space/universe and be an RPG. What defines an RPG is the character development. Unlike traditional FPS games, an RPG allows your character to grow and change, and gain new skills. You are currently playing a MMORPG that is not fantasy-based. The Final Fantasy series are good examples of traditional RPGs, butgames like Elder Scrolls IV: Ovblivion (which, incedentaly looks fabulous) are also RPGs because of the importance placed your characters role in the word and the development of skills.

Personally, I love the way that RPGs are moving. You'll notice that the Final Fantasy series in FF XII are actually switching to a more dynamic system, similar in many ways to Jade Empire. KOTOR, Jade Empire, Elder Scrolls and now Final Fantasy XII are all examples of creating a role playing game that is dynamic. Note that they all have different storylines and are not all fantasy-based. KOTOR won several awards as RPG of the year from several magazines and game expos. At this point there's very little to argue about. KOTOR is a RPG, and a great one at that.

As far as Killzone goes...the first one was lackluster for me. I think it was a decent story, passable graphics and some nice features (the different characers was a nice touch, but wasn't fleshed out enough. The new one looks amazing. Of course, when you use FMV and call it game footage, it'll always look amazing. On a straight up comparison, Halo 2 rocks killzone in many departments. I did like Killzones "gritty" feel, but you that's like saying that sure, Madden was a great football game, but Winning Eleven did a lot better job portraying kicking the ball, so it's a better game. Halo doesn't try to be gritty, Killzone does. Halo 2 excels at what it tries to create, Killzone fails in many respects.

But I will say that Killzone was VERY harshly reviewed by most people in the game industry because of the buzz surrounding it. When you attempt to create a "Halo-killer" you better create a game that is supperior in all aspects. They failed to do that. They created a good shooter with some unique aspects, some annoying visual bugs, but overall a good package. But it was just an above average shooter. The story needed some work, as did the script.

Now for those of you who think I'm simply a Halo groupie, allow me to tell you that while I enjoy the X-Box a great deal, I own every system. Living witha friend of mine, we had, combined: 2 X-Boxes, 2 Game cubes, a PS2, a PS1, Sega Saturn, Sega CD, Sega Genisis, 2 Nintendo 64's, a Super Nintendo, an NES, an Atari 2600, an Atari Jaguar (got it for 5 bucks at a garage sale), a nintendo game boy, game boy color, game gear, an GBA: SP, 2 Nintendo DSs and one very nice gaming rig (mine). Pre-ordered a 360 and have already set aside funds for the Revolution and PS3.

So I play and review a lot of games, and I have no bias towards one system. Halo is a superior game to Killzone. It is equal with Half-Life 2, both of which are slightly (very, very marginally) ahead of Doom 3 for the consoles (for the PC it's a different story-- Doom 3 on a good PC has amazing graphics, a series of cutscenes that bring you into the game on a deeper level and the potential to make your roommates cower in fear.On the X-Box however, it's clunky with some minor glitches. not a bad game, but a slightly rushed port. Though the collectors edition, which contains Doom 1 and 2 is quite nice.

Halo was ruined the second they sold out to Microsoft, and shortened the game so it fit the X-Box.

Originally it was slated for PC first, with multiplayer that was to surpass halflife and all other. 64 v 64, battle for the whole halo, with chokepoints and more.

So no "whoa" from me...dang microsoft!

Gothic all the way!!!

RPGs are all about on how you want your character to develop in the world you are set in.You could make a mage, a rouge, a fighter and many otherclasses.You can be evil and kill everybody, or you can do good deeds and be praised by the people. Allthis is in NWN and KOTOR (well, execpt for the kill everyone on sight thing) and also have great stories with different endings.

Here is where people get their stories a bit mixed up. Bungie did originally make games for the mac, but in an effort to stretch their market, they started porting the games over to PC (a move greatly decried by mac fanatics) before Microsoft every bought them, so it was likely that Halo would have been a PC game as well. When Microsoft bought Bungie, Halo was not a first person shooter. If any of you have seen the original E3 trailor, you know how different it was.

Well, around the time they bought Bungie, Microsoft started working on the X-Box. Bungie immediately jumped at the chance to work with the new software, and decided on creating a FPS instead. While they had originally planned a simultaneous release (it was NEVER going to be PC exclusive) with the PC version, the launch of the X-Box dictated that they release sooner. The PC version, released laterstill did present a much more robust multiplayer experience which included vehicle races, newer weapons and different game-types. Halo changed multiple times over the development cycle, but it turned out to be a great game.

Halo 2 was released prematurely by a few months not because of the hype (remember, they were already behind schedule) but to capture the Holiday market (which they definately did). Now, what concerns me is that Bungie is again going to have to meet a static deadline (the release of the PS3 is a very likely date, especially since it seems that the PS3 will be coming out in the fall, not the spring). I don't fear it will be a bad game. The controls will still be slick and intuitive, and they multiplayer will be a blast. But I do fear that they might shorten the game and cut scenes (a la KOTOR 2) to make time. The mechanics of Halo were always great, as was the story, so I know those things will be spot on. But I fear that something might be lost in a rush, such as the video glitches in the cutscenes that appeared in Halo 2.

ah well...I hope not.
