I've never been able to rely on knowing what weapon an npc is using just buy looking at what's in it's hand. An npc will be holding a pistol but will shoot at me from a carbineers range.One time, I fought a blackscale (CL 80 yellow) while I had both cyber arms (+15 range) while using a 65m rifle. With a range of 80m it was still able to shoot at me with a carbine in its hand.

That's my experience. No matter, I look forward to a tough npc battle.
