Thread: to payoff or not to payoff...

Hello to all the BH's. First off, I am a jedi (boo hiss) sorry, I know. Anyway I wanted to get your feedback on a situation I had last night.

I ran out to join up with a group of my guildies and grind some XP. As I arrived on the scene I see a blue dot and the corpse of a jedi. The guy just took out the jedi and was standing around for a bit. I hop off my speeder and get an update from everyone. We get all set to go back to the grind when we notice the BH is still standing around. I asked him if he could please leave now that he killed his mark. (I could see him sending tells to his buddies with all of our names... perfectly legal, just would have been a pain in the butt). The guy says he is going and after another minute or two he takes off.

The group fell apart after this (argh needed 30k to get my next skill) and I headed back to the cantina. About 10 mins later another guildie says he found a spawn of CL 111 NPCs and he asked for some help with them. I was going to log but decided to give him a hand.

Halfway into the 3rd one a blue dot shows up. I make a break for it (being in that horrible 160k range with a borked template atm). It is the same guyfrom before. Of course he wrote down my name (the lowest CL in the group from before, 20 below his 80) and went to get my mission. Still can't complain too loudly at this point.

I get to a safehouse but cant go inside... TEF working maybe? I don't know. So I continue on foot. The guy is a CM build and eventually gets a mez and like 20 DOTs on me. Okay so maybe it was 5. As soon as it wears off I hit him with a root and burst outta there, grab my bike and I am off.

I couldn't enter my house when I arrived so I drove around for about 10 mins. Then I bee line for my place so I can log out for the night. The guy shows up 10 seconds later (he was good). This is where the confusing part comes in... (sorry it took so long to get here).

He parks outside my house and starts sending me tells to pay him off. I told him that I didn't think I should have to pay him for an encounter that I "won". I was no match for him in combat, running and living = win for right now. The guy talked to me for a good half hour about how he will get me next time I come on, or in a week from now. And I am being dishonorable for not just paying him off. I don't get it. Is there any reason for me to have paid him? Why is that the honorable thing? If he fought me and incapped me and asked, then sure I will pay up.

Now I know people love to throw the grief word around a lot these days. So I don't even want to touch that here. But is it "cool" lets say, for this guy to pick my mission back up in a week to specifically target me since I wouldn't pay him off? He could keep my mission, but trust me he won't find me for the next 3 days or so and I doubt he wont hunt some one else in the mean time.

Any feedback would be great. Sorry this got a bit longer than I intended.

it's you choice if you want to pay someone off. just understand that even if you pay them off, that doesnt mean they wont come back tomorrow, or the next day... and... if you pay the bh off, can you afford to do it all the time. that can get really expensive.

I wouldn't pay anyone if I were you, no saying that he's not going to just come back, maybe he couldn't even kill you if he tried. But the BH is well within his rights to hunt you along as your mission is on the terminal.

It is your choice if you pay off somebody. Usually its only before a fight to avoid the fight.
Since you got away, why should you pay him off? Obviously he was not good enough to catch you, he still has your mission. He can try again any time he wants.
Always remember though that even if you pay off a BH, you cannot enforce him to drop the mission, and a few are around that ask for a payout to avoid the fight, and continue to attack after they got paid anyway.
For that particular incident, I would not pay off because as you already said, you were able to keep from dieing and are in your safe house. Technically you forced a draw, the BH has the choice of either keeping your mission and trying to kill you again, or dropping your mission and going after a new mark.
As for the threats of coming for you again: With Publish 20 (which is due next Tuesday) Jedi names will be removed from BH terminals and missions will decay after 3 days. A BH will have a shot to take down a random Jedi for 3 days, then he will have go after another mark. He will not be able to take your mission on purpose after Pub 20.

Next time tell him if he gives you half the bounty you will come out and give hime a second chance...see what he says to that. LOL.

Anyway, I would never pay off a BH or ask a Jedi to pay me off.

I have received /tips from players that I never requested while attacking a Jedi.....I just tell them "thanks" once the fight is over.

OK...I think it comes down to this.Is it worth it to you?I've taken payoffs. It isnt something the Jedi owes the BH. That's stupid. It simply comes down to whether it's worth it to you or not. If you are waiting to go back out and hunt, it may be worth it so that the standoff doesnt waste too much of your time. Otherwise, he may just ahng out and wait you out. But, if you are logging off, it probably isnt worth it. I would at least tell him that was your intention before I do it, but you dont really owe him that either. If a BH takes a payoff, but doesnt honor the agreement, just spread the word to every Jedi you can that he cant be trusted and that option will quickly close for the BH. It'll cost him in the long run.

If a Jedi pays me, I'll leave him alone for a while (days, weeks) until his mission has changed in value. But I don't ask for it.

I never have accepted payoffs nor will I ever. A Jedi knows when he sees me, it WILL be a fight to the death. Mine or his.

Thanks for the replies all. As I said most BH's I have never had a problem with. This guy was just so ADAMANT that I had to pay him. I have tipped some BH's a small amount to cover their droids and what not if they are camping one of my friends in a safehouse. But, I have never just paid a BH to go away. And I don't think I should have this time as well.

Is Pub 20 really due next Tues (07/19) because that would be perfect and this guy would definately not be finding me easily again.

/tiphat to the BHs that responded.

This same thing happened to a guildmate of mine. The was hunted by a BH and escaped...I think someone picked him up in a vehicle. Anyway the BH, starts sending tells to the Jedi saying he has to pay the bounty because he would have killed him, this was not paid. This BH then, with some of his guildmates started exclusively hunting my guilds low level Jedi.

So as I said above, I would never pay, but some of the people who play this game are tools and will try to extort credits from you

Ummm....This may be a little different, especially if the vehicle is an unattackable vehicle. That would be a borderline exploit. If you get out of it because you use an exploit, the BH has a legitimate complaint...assuming he hasnt also used one. He should be compensated for his lost droid(s) and wasted time if his mark cheats. I'm not implying that this is a cheat, but it may be if the vehicle is unattackable.

Whether the Jedijust outran the bh or used a borderline exploit, I think that the offer ride is a little cheap but it is not an eploit(feel free to offer any proof that it is an exploit), the BH is not entitled to anything.

Whatever!

Requesting a payoff "or else", is called extortion and can be reported.
