Thread: Jedi Population Cap

I might be misunderstanding what you said, so if I am, please correct me. But it seems that when permadeath happened a Jedi would basically go back to zero so to speak but still be Jedi. Is that correct? If so then I still see a problem with not having a cap. Currently we'll say there are a 1000 players and 100 Jedi. No matter how many times a Jedi get's killed there will still be 100 Jedi, then add to that mix others becoming Jedi. So now we are at 1500 players and 200 Jedi, then 2000 players and 350 Jedi. Do you see what I'm getting at, Jedi will possibly increase faster than total players.....

With pub 10 it seems that it might become easier to become a Jedi if the DEVs don't do their jobs right.... with this being the case Jedi could increase even faster. So either bring back permadeath and use my cap idea or bring back permadeath and make becoming a Jedi so difficult that the total population will increase faster then the Jedi population. With the current system there really is no way for BH'sto control the Jedi population other than just pissing them off.

Why do you care?

The way I look at it, the more Jedi means more missions, which in turn mean morechallenges for the BHs .

Sorry... my last post was in response to:

i dont think there should be a cap but there definately should be permadeath in this game, there are too many jedi and sooner or later they are all gonna be knights and there is no way in hell we're gonna kill all them and keep the count down. if permadeath was back in there would be no more getting rez'd when they die. only the strong would survive and then they wouldnt run around like gods anymore. dont get me wrong i wanna be a jedi so bad but even i know that there should be permadeath in the game for jedi. they complain all the time like i didnt grind all those professions to lose my guys when i die. its not like they lose their slot, they just haveta start their jedi all over again. it would just remind me of playing diablo 2 again with a hardcore character, when you die your dead and you haveta do it all over again whether you were level 9 or 99.....

grow up jedi, now that your tough permadeath should come back, whos with me.............

Hey Tanks!

Kill a Jedi, there he is tomorrow. Kill a Jedi, there he is tomorrow. Killa Jedi, there he is tomorrow... hey didn't I kill you already. Don't get me wrong, I love being a BH and the Jedi missions are cool and hard (I'm not that high up the BH tree) and yes, I know it's a game. Personally I feel there should be less Jedi and that BH's should get to take part in controlling their population.... I feel that right now there is no control, only penalties. Maybe a pop cap isn't the solution, but it's an idea.

I'm wondering if maybe there was another class that could control the jedi instead of us poor Bhs. Now don't get me wrong, I love BH despite some of the problems. My god, someone playing a class because they like the idea? Novel concept I know in this day and age of uberness.

What if there were some kind of Jedi vs. Dark Jedi thing going on? I mean we BHs could still hunt both sides, but what about introducing more of a light side/dark side battle to keep the sides balanced? That way the god like characters can wipe each other out, and we can shoot whatever is left. The dark jedi would get more points to be on their council, and vice versa, and we just do what we do best I guess. That way Jedi won't just be looking for us, but having to watch their backs from another threat.

You know, when I first started I thought that Jedi would be super rare. Maybe 1/1000, and it would be really hard to get. I actually thought you would be chosen for this profession based on your conduct in game etc...

I don't know if this idea has been stated or not but what if Jedi was the only population that was capped, say to 5% (maybe to high) of the total server population. That means a server with a 1000 players would only have 50 Jedi. When the Jedi population cap was hit no one else could become one until 1) the total server popluation increased or 2) a jedi died (bring back permadeath). When a Jedi slotbecomes available another player who qualified to become a Jedi would randomly be picked. Of course this would bring up many questions/facts like:

What to do with all the current Jedi? Bring back permadeath until the numbers are under the cap.

Randomly picking who can become a Jedi is not fair. Maybe, but who cares.

Lot's of people who bought this game to become Jedi would get mad and leave..... Bye bye.

It would be hard to survive as a low level Jedi if this were all true. Most likely, but then those that do survive will have really accomplished something, you know, like becoming a Jedi.

Any thoughts? Flame away.....

My Solution would be instead of Permadeath make it so that once a Jedi is Incapped he is unable to play that Character Slot for so much time IE once a Master Jedi is killed he cannot relogin to that slot for 48 hours orso but can still play his alt character that or lock there force powers for a time period after each death

i dont agree, because then they still will be alive and can make their guy get more powerful eventually which is totally rediculous

1. HUGE source of griefing. Person A gets 10 of his friends to gank every Jedi they see until he gets his FS spot.

2. For roleplaying potential....not every character who becomes Force Sensitive will have to become a Jedi. How are you going to limit this? Anyone can be Force sensitive, but not take the title? Limit skills? What if they later decide they want to try and become a Jedi, and even though they are FS they can't because of the Pop cap? On top of thatyou will have people complaining about the gamers "wasting" the Jedi spot they feel they deservewith an FS non-Jedi.

3. A lot of people will pack up and leave....a LOT of people. Maybe you don't care but since SOE is footing the bill for all this, they might.

4. Suppose the server pop decreases after this is put into effect? How would you like it to log in one day and find a letter in your box saying, "Well due to the decrease in server traffic, we have revoked your FS status until more people decide to come to this server. Sorry for the inconvenience." Now what have you accomplished?

5. How exactly do you propose to measure server population? By logins? I refer you to point 4. By character count? How many characters do you have per account on different servers. Suppose I choose to do my friend a favor and make a bunch of toons that I never use just to inflate the Jedi population a tad? What is it to ask a random person to generatea random character that they never use?

Yep..

too many Jedi.... (sounds like a primus song)

should be hard to be that powerfull.

should be easier to get.

should have permadeth.

The problem... is that none of the hologrinder/Jedi ever read the memo...

They just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant they're uber powerfull invulnerable immortal jedi..

and SOE caved because they care more about new subscriptions than player turnover.

I would like to suggest, and I am sure I am not the first to mention it, that the developers institute a population cap on the number of Jedi allowed in the game.

In the beginning, Jedi was never really advertised as a profession you could master (at least not that I have seen). Now, however, they are actively advertising it (view TV promo). I believe thatthe change in this advertising methodology regarding Jedi will obligate SOE to provide an opportunity for new players to become Jedi. Some players believe, as it has been mentioned before on these forums, that this will ever decrease the abilities of Jedi and relegate them to an "average" profession within the game andput the Jedi on an equal level with Elite Masters from any other combat profession. Jedi should be better (in many ways but not all ways) than any other combat profession but there cannot be so many of them and that is what is hurting us.

I agree with this line of thought and by looking at the rate of decline since publish 9 with each hotfix, patch and upgrade and the increasing number of Jedi entering the game due to the advertising, it certainly points in that direction.

Why is it that they do not allow Jedi to character transfer to other Galaxies? My original understanding was that they did not want to overpopulate a galaxy with jedi. But with Jedi now being advertised as a viable option, isn't that exactly what is being done? Overpopulating? Once they start to allow Jedi to transfer to other servers, it will be further evidence that the profession is no longer "unique" (if it even still is).

I suggest that the developers withdraw their advertising of the Jedi as a viable profession within SWG, set and announce a future date (3 months, 6 months, 1 year) after which point the Jedi will be have reached its cap for the server and no other player will be able to seek that profession till a Jedi account is closed or deleted. All current Jedi remain in the game, all current players in the game who have faint glows may continue down the path to Jedi or all players in the game period can get jedi..but no new characters entering the game can. Numerous ways to manage it but I believe a cap is needed.
