Thread: pistols or carbines?

I cant make up my mind what to use with creature handler. I recently switched to CH from BH/carbineer because I have so much fun with pets. Now I am a CH/pistoleer. I am not sure if I like the pistols better than the carbines and I am having second thoughts. The advantages of pistols seems to be health bleeds and the small melee damage penalty (only 1.2 for pistols...its 2.0 for carbines). The advantage of carbines is the AP 2 laser carbine, range knockdown and state effects. I find the HAM to not a be a big issue. The Ar1 pistols use alot of HAM and smart use of food and buffs negates the HAMs anyway.

I am curious what people feel works better for killing big game....

I really cant decide and I need some help

Many thanks...

i find rifles to be most effective. i can kill a largish group of creatures REALLY fast or one big thing REALLY fast. i have access to two different AP2 rifles the jawa ion that does stun damage, and the AP3 T21 for medium and heavy armoured targets.

cant be beat. commandos come second in damage ability to a master rifle user.

I would say if you want to go solo in PvE go rifleman without a doubt. Second would be to go up the flame tree in commando and third would be carbiner.

Pistoleer tends to shine in PvP and in group PvE.

In PvP the high fire rate, nice damage spread on pistols, accuracy (at master level) which is effective from from 60m to 0m, combined with the ability to run and shoot (staying "outside" the range of other professions) and improved (fixed) dodge abilities makes it very deadly point for point.

In PvE fanshot is VERY effective. It hits once per second (at master level) and will hit multiple baddies (its a cone shot) from 500-1000 damage each. SOE is talking about nerfing it however

If that turns out to be the case I would say only go pistoleer if you are going to go up the BH tree to gain more pistol speed to use stoppingshot more effectively (stopping shot is the highest per hit damage special but is too slow to be useful with just pistoleer alone).

Otherwise, IMHO, go carbiner for a balanced PvE/PvP templet or go riflemen or commado for a strong PvE templet.

Being a wookie mch i can appreciate the comments here concerning rifle and carbine. The main reason I went (going) pistoleer is that my mind bar is short. Pistol specials drain the action bar so I went that route even though i do more PvE. We'll see what the dev's do with fan shot, however, and I may need to rethink the whole thing.

Which do oyu think is most effective against jedi? considering the amount of damage done by carbines and the crazy skills carbines seem better but im a pistoleer at the moment and ive heard stories of carbineer bounty hunters slaughtering knights so im just curious...

ok. now during the respec i decided to plump for pistolleer to go with my mbh but since then, i've been having doubts about it. the pistol speed increases and such don't seem to really be helping much so i've been wondering if during this token respec it ight be worth my while switching to carbineer.

i'd like to get people opinion on this.

erm...also could anyone tell me where i can get a mandalorian helmet? i've seen people with them on here and there so any help would be great.

Carbines. They're more powerful, great speed, good range, etc.

What did you put in that elite carb to give it that sac? I have an elite carb with a similar damage but 120 SAC. It would be a great weapon to use, but the SAC drains me very, very quickly.

Definitly carbines, but I would still go pistoleer 0004 for the root, if you can

I say go with what you feel you will have fun with, not just whatever pwns. you can make any template work really, you just have to learn how to use it.

I'm curious about this as well...

MBH/MP/C0440 or

MBH/MC/P0404

It seems that with Master Carbines I'd get alot of redundant or 'less used' special attacks. Lots of them are 'nice' but seem less useful one-on-one. I'd still have the 15-second root from improved stopping shot and the disarm from pistols.

However, on the other hand, I wonder how MUCH of a difference it would make being a MBH/MP/C0440 template but instead fighting with a carbine the majority of the time...unless the fight gets close.

So I guess my own question is...what is more valuable....

Using the MBH/MP/C0440 and fighting with a carbine at range you gain the extra 5 seconds of root from Advanced Stopping Shot over Improved Stopping Shot, You gain +25 general ranged speed over the MBH/MC/P0404 template, You lose 5 points general ranged accuracy, You gain 5 points of general melee defense and general ranged defense is the same in both templates.

However, because you are using a carbine, you lose the carbine-specific bonus to accuracy, speed, and defenses in trade for the longer range of the carbine.

Using the MBH/MC/P0404 template you still have a root with improved stopping shot, but its 5 seconds shorter. You lose 25 general ranged speed, gain 5 general ranged accuracy, lose 5 points general melee defense, and general ranged defense is the same in both templates.

So the big question I'm curious about is this:

If a person were MBH/MP/C0440 and fighting with a Carbine the majority of time instead of a pistol...what differences would they see? What difference would losing that carbine accuracy and defense make?

Is it enough of a difference to give up the additional 5 seconds of advanced stopping shot?

What do you guys think? Opinions?

^^ wow thats alot to take in.

I go pistols because I enjoy them, and with pistols needing to be in saber throw range and against longer range professions ie: carbines and rifles, I think defence is key. I tried other combinations but I found 0404 SL goes well with any manly pistol template, but thats just me...
