Whatever you decide to be, don't do something stupid like i did when i respecc'd back into BE and forget that you also need the explore tree of scout to sample DNA with. If you don't, than starting a bit below your own combat level, you will only be able to sample yellow dots and hope there's no red dots nearby.
Since BE / anything takes you only about about level 60 in combat there's a whole approx20 level's of red-dot critters who will look at you and laugh.

Ranger based templates cost too many skillpoints to be worthwhile, and Scout Mask Scent is dependant upon levels...so you will always have problems with the higher level critters.
With Smuggler, u can feign death whenever u get aggro, then pop up right next to the critter u want to sample...and on top of that you can slice, make spices, sell faction points (if colonel) and have at least SOME fighting skills.
Now spices may not be the crafter you would like...but if you do go for another pure crafter profession, you better have an alt as Merchant as you wont have enough vendors.
Without knowing what aspect of BE is attractive to you, it is hard to know what template you should be.
A 14pt Master Artisan human with master BE and some merchant can make some bank selling food and meds.
With the changes to pub 21 ranger isn't looking so attractive. If you are grouped with CL80s not much will break your mask scent anymore, least nothing you plan on sampling. Area track has been almost useless since speeders came about. So you may not need anything more than the basic mask scent. Novice ranger is good for the harvesting bonus... that it gives to other people.
If you are interested in pets smuggler for the fiegn death and daze is very good when you get argo. Although you can do just as well being a CH and smuggler. Keep in mind anything pet deed you make you'll need some merchant to sell. BEs for that reason make great alts since a main can sell the stuff, but as a stand alone char, it isn't as useful. Even the master artisan/BE/merchant template won't be all that exciting.
It comes down to do you like crafting, combat or pets? Are you doing BE just for base take downs? Maybe some of the other professions needed for slicing the terminals.

Again smuggler is handy for that...
When I made pets Pre CURB, there wasn't much call for pet vendors because everything was so unique...now it's a bit more generic it may mean that pets are vendor items...I can't comment because atm im only 0404 BE.
If Pets get a new lease of life in this patch, then I will come back to pet crafting, and I will be using my token respec on MBE/MSmuggler...

Fast enough to out run stuff till it get's tired of me..Always group with lvl 80...Not much on the combat front ...More passive than anything...
I've never had any trouble sampling cl 75 aggressive creatures with a CL 17 MBE as long as I'm careful and approach them slowly.
Unless this is new(I haven't really read the patch notes), its just not true.
