Did I just have a bad day, or is DNA sampling bugged?

I spent one hour trying to sample a lvl 54 creature to no luck, is this how it is supposed to be? Is it because the CL of the critter compared to my CL influences the outcome or what?

I have CL 17, 4040 scout, MBE, the problem is not beeing detected but to get a DNA sample. So any help would be apreciated.

I had same problem wit ha lower level creature, It turned out that my inv was full so it wouldn't be successfull, try that

Nope that's not it I always go out with almost empty backpack as it is a pain to have to stop sampling just because you do not have enough inv space.
