I got Master Scout just to be able to see CL's. After I dropped it I started using http://www.swgcreatures.com/.
Just Alt-Tab out of the game to do the search, then switch back to the game.

Do you need master scout to do this? And if so, is it worth getting master scout to do this? I'm going to start BE soon, and don't know how much easier this ability would make the job.

I can't recall the exact level at which you can do this. My ranger can, dunno at what level you get that ability though. But to be honest, it's not a skill I would expend skill points to get if that's all I wanted out of it. You can real easily go to www.swgcreatures.com and look up the CL on just about any creature. That said, master scout is pretty great though. Uber mask scent, foraging, nice camps, nice harvests. To me the best part of being a ranger is being a master scout, lol.

You can see it as a Master Scout. I had novice ranger and can still see it as MS now that I've given up ranger.
Now I just have to decide whether to give up MS or MCH since I've got enough xps for clone 3 or tissues 3.

I usually just get a rough estimate for the level based on the amount of sampling xp i get, trying to take into consideration aggro/vs. nonaggro xp adjustment. Once my DNA sampling is maxed, I drop master and dna 4 and retrain
Crude sure, but it's one method that can be used when you can't find the mob on a websiteand don't have the skill points to master scout.
