Thread: blood samples to be collected by rangers

Hi everyone,

I recently started a thread on the ranger forum for an idea to give the ranger profession a new market and something to harvest that for once scouts cant as well. The idea was to be able to collect blood sample from creatures we encounter that we can later sell to bio-engineers who can then sample the blood for dna. I believe this could be of benefit for both rangers and bio-engineers, but thought i'd like to hear your views as well. We don't want to steal another professions skill, but i think with the blood samples only usable by bio-engineers anyway it cant actually negatively effect you at all.

I'm a Wayfarer,Hunt Master and MBE, and while I can sample with the best of em, and I like that I can thoroughly examine creatures I haven't yet seen, I'll be darned if I can get the meat I need for other things, because my weapon skill must necessarily be too low to hunt effectively. Yeah, that fast crawl speed is expensive in skill points and maybe I should drop wayfarer, but with the new maskscent nerf my fast crawl has been a real advantage for sampling muties.

I think your idea is pretty good, and I don't see a major downside to it. Rangers are in dire need of some functionality. I also wish that an MBE could see the animals information like a master ranger can, so I could drop hunt master as the harvesting bonus is useless without good weapon skill.

To prevent the best DNA from becoming too easily obtained, I think that the ranger must use a DNA sampling kit crafted by BE's that somehow transfers the skill of the BE who made it. There are two advantages to this. I think that kind of two way trade would help prevent rangers from over-speculating, and flooding the market with mutant rancor dna, making it the cheapest dna available. I'm thinking that if cooperation was required this way, most of the sampling would occur when a ranger already has a customer wanting specific dna. Also, the resources required to make the kit can be adjusted to compensate for the efficiency gained by this kind of specialization.

I'm gonna /bump this. I like this thread and it possibly opens up some opportunities for the Rangers. I kind of like it.

Its an interesting idea, but it seems kind of "ho-hum" to both rangers and BE's to be honest. Rangers have big problems right at the very core of their profession, i.e. they are very poor hunters and harvesters and most of their skills are useless. I'd say that ought to be the biggest development priority before we start worrying about things like this. Also, if rangers wanted to get into this sort of business there is already a good opportunity to do this now. Since the biggest challenges in getting high level samples are locating and then approaching the animal (BMBQ and mutant rancors in particular), rangers can use their tracking and cammo abilities to help BE's right now if they wanted to do that.

Others have proposed in the past the concept of selling dna from one BE to another and it's always gotten a luke warm reception.

This idea was already put forwards by me around 4 months ago and Talthazar was working on pushing it through to see what the devs thought. The difference from your idea though is that BEs made the needles to draw the blood which is actually a new resoruce type. They then can extract dna samples from at a ratio of 1 units to 1 sample. The better the needles the BE makes the more units are extracted with each success and the successes themselves are higher. This means that all professions can gather blood however scouts and rangers would naturally have a significant advantage to this.

I do agree that rangers pretty much need an overhaul, and this would only scratch the surface as far as making it a standalone profession. But it would help BE's! Of course, we don't really need alot of help these days. I believe that even without any weapon skill, ranger traps should be enough to incapacitate a wild animal and collect any resource they might get from it, milk, meat whatever. A trapped animal should be put into such a vulnerable state that the ranger could finish it off with a basic weapon at novice marksman.

Man, that's the big drawback to discussion forums. The only ideas that get any attention are the extremely contraversial ones. Ideas where everyone is in agreement are instantly vaporized by a strong argument in favor of the idea, as nothing else needs to be said. So, whenever you see a good idea, you should taut it's virtues piece by piece in small, incomplete posts spread out over the week.

I dunno. Like I said, BE's have shown only very moderate interest in the past in terms of delegating dna sampling to others. I sort of think that the experience of going out into the wild and finding the DNA you need is sort of a core experience for a BE, and the rest is just crafting. Also, when you consider how few "real" rangers there are (i.e. other than the 0-0-4-0 rangers) and how few BE's there are, I don't think that this would make a whole lot of impacton either profession if it were implemented. There are much bigger fish to fry for both professions.

I think that many BEs like myself have a love/hate relationship with sampling. We're the only crafting class in the game that routine enter life-and-death situations for our resources. That both makes us unique and also is a source of frustration. If this were implemented, would the Sampling line be removed or would a craftable be added that would allow rangers to sample and then sell (and BEs could also still sample if they wanted to).

Or how about this? Why not make the craftable DNA sampler something that anyone could use? Rangers would be able to use it best (with the camo kits and stealthy crawling and creature location and all), but others could give it a try if they wanted to (maybe make the item certification show up in novice scout and novice medic?).

If our sampling line were removed, what would be a good replacement? Creature buffs, the ability to play vet (use petstims more effectively than the average TKA), bionics/cybernetics, etc. could all be possibilities.
