Just had to vent - and i think everyone in this forum can sympathize.

I just started a second char, and decided on BE+CH. I know what i have to do to get there... but the sampling makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty nail.

I spent 3 hours last night cleaning up yard trash around moenia, and failing 4/5 tries. I'm maskscented, etc... it's still killing me.

Does getting the maskscent boost in clothing improve your success rate? Or do i just have to grit my teeth until sampling 1 when i can start trying for something that gives more than 92xp?

Lisa: I'm not trying to power grind through the profession - I'm not in a big hurry at all. I was just wondering if i was doing something to cause the really high failure rate i was seeing (turns out i'm not).

While i'm not trying to do the prof Hologrinder style, i still dont want to spend hours on end sampling with very little return (xp)... It sucks, but it's just something i'm going to have to deal with.

I chose BE knowing it wasn't easy, and not knowing how hard. It's a little slower/harder to level than i would have wanted, but i'm going to stick with it, i agree with you and know that it will be worth it. This profession will be awesome when i figure it out

Cylenthia: Thanks again for the detailed feedback, you have been a big help! Where did you get the information on Piket levels and XP given? - Is it something you have in your personal records, or something i can find on a website/in the forums somwhere?

A little of both actually. As I was climbing my way through the DNA tree (which I found very easy and fun; viewed myself as a Field Scientist collecting data) I would write down (record in a EXCEL spreadsheet) all of the information about the creatures. I was a Master Ranger at the time so I was able to see ALL of the information. It was sometime later, however, that I figured out about http://www.swgcreatures.com website which has a wealth of information. If you want to know it about a creature, go there.

Basically you need to grin and bear it. +Maskscent clothing is only going to help you to approach aggressive MoBs. If you are sampling Durni's and Butterflies then don't bother. Your sampling success rate will improve, albeit slowly, as you progress through the ranks. Here is a list of sampling success levels:

NBE - CL20
DNA1 - CL30
DNA2 - CL40
DNA3 - CL50
DNA4 - CL65
MBE - CL75

Before I get flamed and someone running off at the mouth about how they sampled a mutant rancor as a Novice BE let me state that this list is the AVERAGE success rate for those levels. Theoretically (still haven't seen proven date) a NBE can sample a CL75, but the success rate would probably be less than 1% and the agro rate would be higher than 99% (Guessing here).

Best advice I can give you is to get some +400 Brandy and some Vegash; get a vehicle macro; zoom around and sample everything. If something agros you, just ride away and come back. If you break maskscent, don't move; remaskscent and you should be fine. (this isn't 100% of the time though).

So, what CL are pikets? - will i be able to sample from them at NBE? If not, what level should i wait for before trying?

The CL listing vs. level is going to be a HUEG (that's bigger than huge ) help!

Stop trying to power your way through it, three hours of sampling ? yowch.

Maybe sample for 1k xp then do something else. There is just no way to do it consistantly unless you have a BE friend line up a row of dumi's for you.

It IS worth it. I even seem to get a kick out of rock climbing on Dath, risking death and Mutated monster slobber.

a Picket = CL30 (346 DNA xp)
a Picket Plainswalker = CL32 (370 DNA xp)
a Picket Longhorn = CL37 (430 DNA xp)
a Picket Longhorn Female = CL30 (346 DNA xp)
a Fierce Picket Protector = CL45 (531 DNA xp)

So you can sample a Picket at DNA1.
