I was asked by a customer last night the effective ham of a gurrcat I had made with a 10k ham 30%resist to kinetic and AR1
How does the armour affect the ham in the calculation?
...was approached by some chump the other night asking to make him a level 10 rancor, I said it couldn't be done and he called me a N00b... *sigh*

AR1 reduces damage by 50% (with the proviso below).
Resists reduce that damage again by whatever percentage they are. However, if there is a "vulnerable", it's considered a hole in the armor and you'll take full damage from that damage type.
If you had a pet with AR1 and Kinetic 30%, but Energy "Vuln":
Inbound Kinetic damage: 100
gets reduced by the AR1 to 50. It's then reduced a further 15 damage to 35.
If it's hit with an Energy attack though, it will take the full 100 points damage.
The Effective HAM for the pet you mentioned would be around 19500.
There is a much more in depth explanation in the Advanced Guides section of the main page.

I'm glad you posted that, I just worked it out to 28.5k myself. Essentially, meroc was correct in saying that for each hit of 100 points, 35 gets through, it's just his final figure was incorrect.
