Thread: is light armor necessary in the original to get light armor in your template?

i've been doing a lot of sample collecting and pet crafting since i mastered BE on friday. i've read the (amazingly useful) FAQ about 80 times. i've been keeping records of the DNA i use, and how i experiment, and now i understand the FAQ a lot more than i did at first. i'm getting much better at learning how much to experiment on what and when to stop. today i achieved a goal i set for myself, two pets in the 30s (one is CL 38, one is CL31) that i can call at the same time, both with 60% kinetic and light armor, and the combination of the 4 specials i wanted. they're not the best pets ever made, but i count it a 100% success since i reachedmy goal. of course now i'm figuring out my next goal but first, a question about light armor.

on my 'oops only got fortitude 496 or 499' pets, i sample their DNA, and most often i get a sample with fortitude of 500-510. the DNA sample itself has this number but also none for armor rating. i've been reusing that DNA in templates with at least one DNA sample that did originally have light armor, because of this line in Sumorex's experimenting section: "If Fortitude exceeds 500, the template might pick up Light Armor (seems to depend on having light armor DNA in specific slots, but I haven't narrowed it down to guaranteed slots)"

there's also a line up earlier in the FAQ, in the armor and resists section, that says "Armor is determined by fortitude. If the fortitude is over 500 you get armor, under and you don't."

so what i'm wondering is, does getting light armor in your final template depend completely on just the fortitude number being over 500, or does it also somewhat depend on (at least one and we may not know which one) slot having light armor? i have not yet had any creature i made with fortitude over 500 fail to have light armor, but i also haven't tried to make one using only 5 close calls that got fortitude over 500 but not light armor. i don't currently have 5 close call samples to run a test myself, but i am very curious and just might do that someday.

I have only once got fortitude over 500 and NOT got light armour, that was using a mix of light armour, close calls and no armour, if I get 5 close calls later I'll give it a test but generally having over 500 fortitude is what makes light armour.

The 500 fortitude thing = light armor seems to be about 99% correct. I've made hundreds of pets and never had one where it had armor and less then 500 fortitude. However I've had maybe a dozen pets that had 500 fortitude with no armor, but in all cases what happend was that I experimented up the physique so that it got over 500 and armor, then had some sort of a crit fail in experimenting some other aspect of the pet, and it lost its armor. Odd but true.

As far as your statement about getting dna samples with 500-510 fortitude, there are lots of creatures that have fortitudes in the high 500's or low 600's. Off the top of my head, all the armored mereks have very high fortitude, as well as frenzied graul, and many of the armored voritors. Bark Mite Burrowers and Arcane Warriors do have very low fortitude for armored critters so beware when trying to make armored pets using those.

As far as the title of this thread. Hmm, never tried it. I think what you'd need is to find a creature (assuming one exists) that has say 450+ fortitude, then experiment the heck out of it. It's probably more of an academic excercise than a practical one though, as most of the creatures that I've seen that are unarmored and have desirable traites have <300 fortitude or so and there just no way in heck you're going to be able to experiment it up that much.

-what i meant in this case was samples from pets i'd made, but failed to get 500 fortitude by just a bit. then when i sample their DNA, i get fortitude of about 505, but also a None in the Armor Rating category.

-right i haven't tried that, to get it up high from starting low and not throwing in something (say MH) that does have high fortitude in also. if i do try it, i'll report results here.

Actually I've done it. I took 5 unarmored samples that got me to a little less than 300 fortitude on the combine and I was able to experiment it up to light armor. I only have 5 experimental points to work with so I'm sure if you had more, you could do it easier. What I found though is that when you experiment physique, like all the other experiments, it will alternate the 2 stats that can be adjusted, and if one fails it seems to enhance the other. So, I used 2 pts on the first physique and it worked on the ham instead of fortitude. It also said it failed so the ham went down, but the fortitude went UP! Since it alternates, the second attempt HAD to go to fortitude so I put all 3 pts in and I got well over 500 for the light ham award. I can't remember for the life of me what samples I used though. I should write this stuff down.
