Heh ok im a noob to BE, shoot me.

I noticed that when i select a creature i want to sample, there is a number on the left. What is it? I noticed that when i move closer to the creature it goes down, so maybe its a 'scared' meter or something?

you mean the accuracy number? thats a rough rating of how accurate you'll be with the weapon you have equipped....rifles are most accurate at long range, so if you have one equipped the number will go down the closer you get. Try unequipping your weapon at about 20m, the number will change to a "---" since you're out of unarmed range
