A lot depends on what you hope to accomplish with BE... if you are simply in it to make pets, then Ranger skills are completely the way to go. If you are hoping to supply Chefs and/or Tailors... I recommend a bit of Artisan for your surveying... the more the merrier. I recommend a decent combat professionto stay on top of the meat situation. Nothing seems to gather meat better for me than to hunt in a good sized group and make sure they are all aware that I am buying at the end of the game. Bottom line:

What play style do you find most enjoyable? Mix it up... try different things... mold your avatar into what you want.
