Thread: Request for Structure: Genetic Sequencer

Something of this nature has to have been suggested by now, but I'm just starting to work with BE, and I thought I'd throw in my opinion. I think it would be really great if BEs had the opportunity to have a factory that we can use for our creatures.

This is not a structure that would take meat business away from scouts and rangers, or flora business away from surveyors. If anything, it would create more demand.

Here is the structure I'd propose. Using the factory code, create a new spec for a "Genetic Sequencer". This genetic sequencer would take a DNA sample (or template) and with the addition of meat and flora as a growth medium, create crates of these samples. A limit of 1000 samples could be produced, as with current factory settings. BEs would still be going out to look for that ever better sample of DNA to clone.

Since currently all of our samples are gathered by hand and unique, we lose the ability to create anything in a factory.

1) BEs have the unhappy situation where a critical failure is catastrophic, and potentially akin to losing rare components. All DNA is gathered by hand and a failure is often a complete start from scratch.

2) BEs, similar to Weaponsmiths, have a product which can only be used by certain skill sets. Depending on the CH skills (or lack of CH skills) that a buyer has, they need a pet with certain CL. As the CL isn't apparent until the final pet is created, we burn a lot of DNA and have a lot of uncertainty in our crafting.

3) BEs have the dubious distinction of being the only class in the game that can use our crafting system and potentially end up with an "invalid" product. So even if you do end up with a good pet, it may turn out to be worthless to it's buyer after it is used for the first time (or at a future date).

Situations 1-3 above (among other things such as the danger and variation of collecting) make BE a very difficult profession to do, and even more difficult to do well. Cloning experimentation is very time consuming. Many BEs I know don't even make clones anymore.

Are there reasons this shouldn't be in game? How could it be changed to work better?

WHy not just make it so that we can harvest multiple samples - same as harvesting any other resource from an animal. So you go off ans sample your friendly neighbourhood Mutant Rancor and get a stack of 1-10 DNA bits.

It wouldn't allow for huge factory runs - but it would also alieviate some of the pain.

No Sig for now... stay tuned

I don't think that the demand for pets is high enough to require that. The effort that we currently put in is 100% of the value of a good pet. Making the process easier will simply lower the value of a custom made pet. I think that such a change would quickly supply everyone with their perfect pet, and the market would crash.

Good answers. I like the market just as it is and I am all for mulitple samples from one animal...limit 10 maybe....before it keels over dead.

I was of the same opinion before, but with the introduction of combat droids the situation changes completely.

The devs have already stated that they want a CL10 pet to be the same regardless of whetherit is a droid or a creature, and they will at some point change the pets we create to be in-line with droids.

The big issue here is that Droids can be made in factories, bio-engineered pets can't. Having a structure like a genetic sequencer would enable us to compete at the same level.

Nancy, cid666 made a necro post. He/she has done this several times now (a few times to which you ended up responding to).

Just wanted to let you know.

I was wondering who created the concept and design for the BE profession in SWG, who implemented the system, finalized the structure and approved it for the game? I don't want to know names, just a picture of each would work so that, if i ever seeany of them, i can avoid meeting them.

did you know that every cell, except blood cells, has dna in it?

did you know that dna can be coded based on the protien structure of a hair?

so, why can't i take aunit of meat, or hide, or bone from an animal and synthesize as much dna as i want?

Also, if i'm a supposedly a "bio-engineer", why can't i isolate genes with specific traits and move them around, and copy them, or experiment with them to see if i can make them better, or remove them, or splice them in, or make them active, or inactive with the introduction of a specific hormone?

Research genetic engineering sometime, and you'll see just how dissimilar it is from the shoddy, half-thought-out, system you use in your game.
