Any Idea on preferred from of damage to get the most bang for the least skill?

No, I am a bio engineer... I don't have many skill points to put into combat is all

I'd suggest Rifle, if you can get up to at least Adv Rifle Skill (box #2 after Novice Marksman). You can make sure you've got 3 or 4 items of +Cover clothing (bandolier if you can give up a pack, jacket, shirt & pants) and being able to hit the dirt and fire from cover is way cool, I think.

After playing with all the Marksman skills, I think I like Rifle best. But that's just me.
