Thread: A few basic tips to help with DNA sampling
Someone was PM'ing me with questions about the BE/ranger combo and asking for advice on dna sampling, while alot of this stuff we already know it never hurts to remind ourselves from time to time. I'll just paste directly from the PM.
Well judging by your current set up I'd simply reitterate simple tips which you probably already know. But just in case...
- maskscent is 50% stronger when prone, 25% when crouched, normal when standing, 25% weaker when walking and 50% weaker then running. Make sure you stay low.
- groups are risky as you need to make a succesful maskscent check against each of them in the group sometimes multiple times
- some critters might be red aggro but they actually don't attack on sight, it's sometimes possible to get right up to them without them aggroing as long as you again stay low and slow. Know your critters!
- this is just a personal obsevation but having a pet out tends to increase the chance of attracting attention. I dunno if this is just coincidence or by design.
- under the new system you shouldn't sample any creature more than 3 times as they usually die or aggro around the 4th or 5th attempt. (this is based on master sampling mind you, it might be lower for earlier stages)
- again know your critters, not all CL50+ species are aggro, the new version of the endor Blurrg we had so much fun sampling the liars to death from are now CL50 and still non-aggro.
- allow a cool down time for creatures or around 2 mins after they have aggro'd, you'll often find them being more alert afterwards so give them time to settle down.
- sample from the OUTSIDE of a pack of animals, if things go wrong you don't want to find yourself surrounded by some very pissed off friends of the critter you were sampling. Being at the edge of the pack gives you an easier way to escape without being hit.
- sample THROUGH objects. Trees, rocks anything which allows you to stay within range but puts a solid object between you and the target. If they aggro you'll have several seconds for the Ai to find a path around the object plus it allows you to get away while avoiding any ranged attacks they might have.

hehe thanks for the info, finding DNA Sampling to be apain, but i will become Master BE, just will take time

Thanks Tal-N (*****), some really good tips here. It seems to me I get the best results if I'm at 0m range when I do my sample, but I'm not a master. Watch out for aggressive pets. They seem to frequently pick fights with creature around you and then either go haring off or draw them down on you. I'd like to reiterate Tal-N's comment about know your creatures. Some lairs are mixedsocial/non-social. (Picketlonghorns are social, picket longhorn females are not) Start by sampling to death or killing the picket longhorns. If they aggro you you won't have to deal with the females. Once the regular picket longhorns are all gone they you sample the females,if they aggro you, the rest of the females won't attack and there won't be any regulars left to attack you.
