Thread: Mask Scent causes aggro.

This is a problem that I have suspected for a while, and now I'm sure of it. Mask scent can sometimes CAUSE aggro rather than prevent it. If a mob is too low level to attack you, it won't attack you, correct? Well, if you have mask scent on, the creature obviously has a chance, however small, of seeing through your mask scent. If the creature DOES see through your mask scent, it has a chance to attack you, a chance it otherwise would not have (because it is too low level to attack you). My theory is this: the way the formulas are set up, when you have masked scent on, theres a roll to see if you are detected. If you ARE detected, theres yet another roll to see if you get aggro. In the case of low level mobs, without mask scent on, there isn't going to be an aggro roll at all. So, if I haven't made it too confusing, you basically open yourself up to aggro that you would never have gotten if you just turned off mask scent.

Now, you think this might be an unlikely problem, but its really quite common. For example, take a walk down the first couple of levels of the Ryatt Trail on Kashyyk. You stroll on past dozens of hostile level 56s who honestly don't give a crap about you (if you are level 70+). If you have on mask scent, theres a very very good chance that one of these will see through it and aggro you. Try walking by without mask scent, then try walking past with mask scent, and you'll see my point. I have posted this because I'm a CH, and I am tired of getting aggro while taming from mobs that shouldn't be aggroing me. I'm going to post it on the BE, Scout, and Ranger forums as well (as I suspect the same problem probably exists for camouflage, but I doubt it is as much of a problem because camouflage is MEANT for higher level creatures, unlike mask scent, which isn't, or at least doesn't seem like it is).

O, I just checked the notes for test center and it looks like they will be fixing this problem. Still something to watch out for until the next publish.

yup this drives me crazy. good news is, it's supposedly fixed on test:

Profession: Scouts and Rangers

Grey-con (considered) mobs will no longer break scentMask or camo kits.
Lower-level creatures that break scent-mask or camo kits, will only attack from the same distance as they would have had the player not been concealed (rather than attacking immediately).

Good post. I've had the same consideration from differen experiencewhen group hunting on Dantoine. When i get a ride with a mate from one mission to the next i normaly mask to get some extra scout xp. But as you say sometimes youre discovered and cause a mob to aggro. Twice yesterday i was slain out of the speeder and incapped twice, once i died quickly. VERY inconvinient for me though funny for others !

So i wonder if its generaly wise to mask while riding a speeder through the landscape passing alll kinds of mobs ?

lol, yes, they might have fixed this, but now we can't give commands to our pets. I would much rather have mask scent not working, lol.

The only reason this chaffs my cheeks is that you have to mask scent to tame higher cl creatures. Its a nasty bit of catch-22 for us.

Yes. I think you hit the nail right on the head.
I can drive around on Dath all day long, without mask scent on, and not getting aggroed by anything. The moment I put mask scent or camo on, it instantly breaks and I'm aggroed. I haven't bothered with mask scent in a long time, while travelling.

Just make it a habbit to keep it I guess. If you can get close enough to the creature without aggroing (easiest to tell ifyour not maxed onScout XP) then chances are you won't aggro for the time your there. If your just cruising around, don't bother with mask scent. I don't think there's anything wrong with it as it is now, as I aggro far more often if I try to run up into the critters face than I do while trying to sneak up on the beasty.

I know what I'm talk'n about here. If I see a high level agressive, I'm either running away or sneaking up on it to either tame a baby or sample DNA. So long as it's not bothering me, I see no reason to attack it. The kreed of the Streight and Narrow... Or the wise saying of a cowardly Ithorian... Take it either way.

Yeah, hope they fix it. Its annoying to try and use mask scent to sneak up on something higher level (that would agro me normally) and have mask scent broken by something that is about level 20 and that mob comes and attacks me.
