Thread: Currently achievable pets 'fair' or not

Question - Are the currently creatable low level pets 'fair' compared to those that CH have to expend significant points for. Despite the fix made in the latest patch, we are still seeeing numerous reports of CL10 and lower pets with 6-7k Health, kinetic resists of 50% and highly useful specials (strong poison, intimidate etc). Compared to wild CL 10 creatures...well, there is no comparison. Most of these are quite capable of taking down creatures in the mid-20s in level.

I think what bothers me more than anything is the quite obvious point that whoever designed (if one can use such a word) the CL system and how it relates to wild creatures doesn't seem to really understand the realities of game play. Quite honestly, it doesn't matter in the slightest if the pet is vulnerable to all attack forms apart from kinetic if it is only ever used against creature mobs, that even do kinetic type damage with ranged attacks. As such, the 'cost' of having vulnerabilities to all the other attack forms is grossly over-valued in the CL calculation, leading to the current crop of high HAM, high Kin Resist pets being made available to non-CH. Further, it must be obvious to everyone that the calculations used for wild pets and BE pets are completely different and that that is naturally going to cause animosity between BE and CH. Its not a case of BE making better creatures than CH can find in the wild, its a case of them making creatures that are orders of magnitude more powerful than wild pets at the lower levels.

Now, the very cynical part of me wonders if this isn't deliberate. Marginalising the added value of having CH pets over non-CH pets takes many more CH out of the balancing equation in the long run as people that want to have fighting pets give up because non-CH ones are almost as good, and don't take 112 skill points to get. But that is just when I am feeling very cynical.

With the introduction of CL10 combat droid modules next publish, I hope we will get a clearer idea of what the devs actually mean by CL10 player owned vs CL wild/npc. But just seeing what the target is doesn't help unless further moves are made to make it stable and consistent and, most of all, TRANSPARENT. Although making these pets is fun atm, I have this feeling as a CH of wondering why I am bothering to spend all those skill points for such little benefit, relatively. My pets are far more versatile and deal far more damage, but the first can be easily dealt with by using pets in the right situation, and the second is irrelevant compared to even 2 or 3 boxes in an elite combat profession.

The bottom line is though - does it matter? With the combat balance coming up, and all the other changes in the works, we cannot say where it will all end up in the grand scheme. We can, however, look at the relative balance, or lack of it, between CH pets and non-CH pets and try to decide, as a profession, where we stand on the issue. My current view is that the last publish made a step in the right direction it didn't do far enough. Vulnerabilities are being grossly over-valued and specials are apparently completely ignored in the CL calculation, and I just don't think that is right or fair. After seeing post after post from TH talking about not wanting to give players 'free' combat power in the DE update, I am seeing them do exactly that by not properly curtailing the power and usefulness of non-CH pets. I honestly don't see what is wrong with non-CH being limited to 2.5kHAM, 10-15% kinetic and a reasonable special. That would still be more powerful than any wild CL10 but not enough to de-value CH as a combat profession.

Over to you guys.

I didn't read through your whole post, cause its too late and I'm tired, however I did want to point out something to you.

You mentioned "growing animosity between CH and BE". This, as far as I can tell, does not exist in the slightest. Why is that? Because my cl 20'ish pets are 10x better than the non-ch pets I make (and I can make those 5-6k Health non-ch pets still). CH's, frankly, love me. I can make them pets that are so uber its nuts. It is possible for a BE to make a 13k HAM light armored 60% kinetic/energy resist cl 70 or less pet (hard as all getout, but possible). It is almost EASY to make a 12k HAM light armored 60% kinetic 50% energy cl 60 pet. Compare that to the ultra rare Bull Rancor baby (12.5k HAM, 40% kinetic, 60% energy) and I am a CH's best friend. And my pets in the cl 20-30 range are almost as good. Generally no energy resist (lowest I've gotten ar1 with energy and kinetic is cl 30), but at nearly 10k HAM and 40-50% kinetic, a trio of these is very much desired by any and all CH's.

You are looking at this the wrong way, CH's aren't our competition, and we are only slightly their competition (we own the non-ch market, hands down). CH's are our customers, and they love us to death.

ESPECIALLY when you can make a pet that hits for 600 every 2 seconds (mutant rancor damage).

As a master CH I agree that there is little or no anomosity between the CH profession and the BE profession. First and formost the simple fact that there are no longer 20 grual maulers named "forsale" out side of every major starport is nothing short of incredible. Who cares if non creature handlers can get strong pets? even a novice can get a better pet from a BE. No other class even thinks about saying that the weapons that they loot should be better then what they can buy. I think some people see the anomosity that creature handlers have towards the dev's and misread it. We are pissed about the state of our profession but it has nothing to do with what BE's are doing. If we had to play in the state we are in now without those level 65 crafted monsters and hope against hope that we would find that baby bull rancor then we would be really pissed.

A couple of answers

I am both a master CH and a master BE. I am not 'offended' in the slightest by the be profession - please go back to reading comprehension class. And while you are there perhaps learn to use the space bar while typing.

At least this is more along the lines of what I was asking about. I have been active on the CH forums since release and I can tell you straight off there has been a great deal of animosity between the two professions in the past, especially recently as many CH saw BE take away their principle source of income (selling pets to non-CH). And I am not talking about CH players getting pissed at BE players - that is rare. There is an underlying tension between the two professions, evident on both boards, about the skills and abilities of the other.

On the looted weapons vs crafted weapons - check out a few 'legendary' weapons on your server. They are significantly better than anything craftable. Yes, they are extremely rare - so are bull rancor babies, only bull rancors are far weaker than a crafted equivalent CL pet.

But that wasn't what I was asking - you ask the same question "Who cares if non creature handlers can get strong pets?" The point is we should care, one way or the other. We should either accept the current rules, craft away and fight any future changes to pet CLs, or we should decide that the current limits are too lax and push for a set of guidelines that will stand the test of time, instead of us having another hotfix to de-power pets again in a month or so. Will the strength of non-CH pets cause a further reduction in CH numbers over time, or won't it have much effect? I honestly don't know, but I strongly suspect the former.

You mentioned "growing animosity between CH and BE". This, as far as I can tell, does not exist in the slightest. Why is that? Your CL 20 pets are not 10x better than your non-CH in most situations, that is the point. They are maybe 20-30% better, but one takes zero skill points and the other takes 30 or so. But what is most profound is that a BE can make a CL24 pet that can go head to head with a CL65 and hold its ground just fine. Maybe I am looking at this the wrong way but I think so are you. The very fact that we can make a mid-20s pet with AR1, 50+% kinetic, energy and stun (I have made plenty like this), strong poison, another good special, often a ranged attack in there as well, makes CL65 pets almost pointless in their primary role.

I certainly didn't want this to become a BE vs CH issue, because that isn't what its about, and if it does I will simply let it drop. My concern is that, unless the current crop of non-CH pets are further curtailed, then CH becomes even less worthwhile to many people leading to another reduction in population (and therefore voice in the community) and the further marginalisation of biological pets in gameplay. I am just wondering if people who are primarily BEs see this as an issue or not.

Btw, if you really think there isn't the slightest animosity, have a read through http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=creature_handler&message.id=160392
