Thread: Non-Newbie Question : How do you Experiment?

First, to get rid of Newbie questions related to the issue, I have the newbie section, so if that any questions related to the topic are hopefully addressed, and do not need to be addressed in this thread.

Begin Newbie
The answer to the newbie version of the question is, you need a Food/Chemical Crafting Tool, preferably high rated. I have a +14, and then be at a Food/Chemical Crafting Station, preferably Private (i.e. player made, not the ones in NPC citites) which has a high rating (I've seen +43in my galaxy, 40 or above is typically good). When you craft near it, you'll get the option to experiment. The rightmost skill tree (of BE)is what gives you more experimentation points. You don't get the option to experiment when you create clones. No, the quality of the meat and flora do NOT matter when creating clones, but are important when creating other things in the Tissue line. Experimentation, in regards to clones, is done when creating the DNA template.

End Newbie

Ok, this is more geared toward the Tissue line, when creating Stims, Vits, or Tissues, although it could apply when creating CH or MCH pets. How many points do you use up at a time is basically my question. Stims is a little different because you have 2 options, but with Vits and Tissues, you only have power. So, I will state what I do, I just want to see what you other Engineers do, see if I'm like you all, or if I'm cheating myself.

Anyway, when I started crafting, I had crap private crafting stations, crap tools, and cities weren't around. I don't even know if crafting stations and/or tools even had ratings back when I started. So, I would get alot of failures, rather than successes. So what I tend to do, is spend all my experimentation points in a lump some. Use as much as I can to try and raise the stat, and hope that it is a good result. It has worked pretty good for me, but was thinking that the min/maxxer in me, if I did one point at a time, and get good and great successes the whole time, would the end result be better than if I maxed experimented my whole pool, and got a great success? I will look into testin this next time I play, and see what the results are, but I also wanted to see what the BE community does, and why?

Thanks all

I guess I should put my BioEngineer skill tree stats... 3/4/3/4

When crafting tissues I use the "lump sum" method you described. Typically I get two passes at experimenting on tissues since I have 10 points to use.

When experimenting on animals I place one point at a time. I used to think this was crazy and tedious but now I like it. Its subtle and allows me to have more control of the outcome.

What you need to keep in mind is the complexity. Everytime you click the experiment button the complexity of the crafted item increases. Experimenting multiple times on tissues also increases your chance of failure. I've found its best to make one large pass on tissues than a bunch of small shots.

This is also important to keep in mind when making factory schematics. I don't recall exactly, but I think factory time is 4 seconds per complexity point. The more times you experiment, the longer it's going to take to make a factory run on that schematic as opposed to experimenting fewer times with more points used at a time.

I have to agree with the general consensus.

With creatures, I do one at a time, to get the results I'm looking for.

With tissues, I tend to figure out which one I want to work on (for those with two, like Pet Stim) and then do as many as it will allow me. I Figure my chances of getting one Amazing Sucess with 5 experiment points in itis much more likely than getting 5 of them with one each.

Then I go back in and do as many as I can with what's left. I can never decide if I'm happy or disapointed when I have experiment points left, and can't use them... I guess its a good thing, since its as good as I can possibly make it, but I still want to put those points to use.

And the quality of the tool and station working at are VERY important. I never thought much about it until I helped start a player city. The architect threw some high modifiers in the city hall, and I used them...

Yes a good factory definetely helps when it comes to the end products. My Templates and other products are much higher quality than with it. My Station is 43+ and my tools are 14+. If there are better tools out there I maybe interested in getting them. I also keep a Med Probot with chem tools and some supplies. I use the weaker dna and just craft while waiting for shuttles. Can at least make creatures in the mid range reliably that way. But save the good dna for my station.
