Thread: Thunderheart gathering info for Creature Handing
Pets might be "defined" as Attack, Defensive or Pack Animal categories. Once the pet is "specialized", the CH would have abilities that would enhance a pet's performance in a specific role.
Attack pets would do higher damage, might gain armor piercing or intimidation roles, but might be sensitive to damage themselves or be succeptable to intimidate, stun or other such things.
Defensive pets would gain the ability to "shrug off" some attacks, resist intimidation, and take a significant amount of damage at the cost of reducing their own damage output.
Pack Animal would be a new, non-combatant class of pet. They would have an inventory capacity, possibly expandable with player made "saddlebags", that would be accessable to the CH, and capable of being mounts.
Each role would be complimented in our trade by the stats necessary to enhance that performance. Creatures would require high Ferocity and Cleverness to be the best Attack pet. High Dependability and strong Health and Action for Defensive classes, and high Endurance for Pack beasts would greatly enhance their capabilities.
The roles would be partly CH abilities, so non CH pets would not be specialized as Attack or Defensive, though they might be possible as Pack Animal types. The CH would have an ability or command that they would use, similar to Embolden or Enrage now, that would affect a specialized pet in a particular way; Embolden might strengthen the defensive capacity of a pet that was set as a Defensive creature, and Enrage might heighten the damage output of an "Attack" creature by a significant amount.
The CH would gain a much more complex but much more capable range, and we would need to concern ourselves not just with the CL, but with the specific stats needed to suit a pet to an Attack, Defensive or Pack Beast role as well, broadening our contribution to the mix and making BE pets quite highly desirable for their facility in filling each different role.

With a bit of reading between the lines you can tell the devs have started to work on a solid template for the new Droid Commander profession, only yesturday TH said that every new profession added needs to be unique in style, gameplay and aesthetics. Put simply, they want to figure out just what makes the CH a CH and build around that idea when designing the droid commander. Frankly if they want my suggestion they should look at my idea where the DC has to equip a droid control device which stops them from using a weapon however the unique thing is that it allows you to take control over one of the active droids as if you 'become' that droid. That would be a unique twist on the concept of another pet profession. CHs command their pets to do something and let the AI do all the work, the DC would be able to direct them like a normal pet or actually control the droid itself while their character remains motionless. Quite a unique situation wouldn't you say? Putting you character at extreme risk in order to have better control of a powerful war droid. The player becomes both the master and the servant.
Actually, if you want a sample of this, Tal-N, go to the Naritus server forum and look for Nimby's Chronicles. It's the story of a gurreck and his pet twi'lek's adventures, as told through the eyes of the gurreck, and good for a fun read.

Everquest included an ability to see through the eyes of another player, pet or mob, which was a fantastic means of scouting. Your character could also use a floating "eye" pet to scout, which you could direct as if you were the eye itself for a short period of time, at a high health cost. The ability to "become" the pet has been a dream role of many gamers as well as readers of fantasy and legend, and would be quite interesting.

That is an extremely good idea. I remember playing other MUDS/MMORPGs, and they had that ability. Maybe the devs could create a sort of 'meditation' of sort, special to creature handlers, where they would not be able to defend themselves, but would take the eye though the pet..and the pet could run around and look at stuff...for scouting, yes would be awesome. I remember in the MUDs i played, I always had a pet, and would many times take the form of the pet, go check out stuff while my main character sits where he is.
This would be awesome if the devs could put this in, great job coming up with it - lets hope they do this.
BTW, it was always a great way to get screen shots of your own character.

I suggested this kind of things months ago (back when they were talking about elite-elite professions). But others shot it down calling it "magic" despite me giving a perfect way to have it done with science. Just have the CH get a neural interface hooked up to their CNS that has a remote link to a control collar. When the control collar is on a pet, your mind has direct control of it.

I was thinking of more than just a new viewpoint. The droids could have multiple weapons available to them, set on normal AI they just use what is at hand however when you take control of the droid you can switch weapons, turn shields off and on plus you'd need to use the droid to protect your now vulnerable self. Since the player cannot have a weapon to use along with the pet it allows for the droids to have higher CL ratings than what the CHs have, since a player is apparently rated as around CL25-30 it means a single battle droid could be allowed up to CL100 without it meaning that the DC isn't anymore powerful than someone who has CH and commando for example.
Tal-N.. you should post this in the DE thread.. it's a good idea.
