Thought this might interest people, seems a lot of Artisans are calling for certification for harvesters in the Survey line.
The latest thread is here

And please, if you go over there to discuss, keep it civil. Not trying to start a flame war here, just bring to your attention something which affects us.

How would this affect the economy? Artisans probably only want this to inflate prices on their resources...the idea was never to have resources asa stand-alone economy, Artisans are supposed to make their profits by selling finished goods. The lots system was created to keep the total amount of resources on the economy down. All certifying harvesters would do is help the rich get richer and make it more expensive for non-art crafters to secure the materials they need.

There was an elite mining profession in Beta. It was taken out before launch. I see this as hurting everyone, especially archys who depend on thier harvestor, furniture sales.

Actually, I'm not as concerned with archi's, who have already spent the 15 SP's on novice Artisan as the non-artisan-based crafting professions. The general idea is to tie the certs to the survey skill. For an artisan based crafter that's an extra 14 points to get max BER, for us it's an extra 29 to keep our harvesting abilities. There's variations such as letting anyone run a BER 4 harvester and going up from there, but I know I depend on the ability to get a wp from someone and place a harvester on it.

I replied to the main thread on the Artisan forum a hybrid idea that includes all crafting professions.

I honestly see an entry level profession (artisan) wanting the prestige of an elite profession. I do not see any other entry level profession or even elite professionwith even a remote possibility of monopolizing a galaxies economy as Harvester certs would give to the Artisans.

I really disagree with that idea...
There are far too many people who depend on having access to resources, I believe that we shouldnt have to take up surveying skills to be able to place harvies... By taking away this ability from the non-artisans then demand will rise as supply falls... this will obviously cause inflation...
Thiswill cause hell for all the novice docs/bio engs and other poor people who want to craft, but dont want to limit thier selves by spending points on skills, just so they can harvest resources...

This would have been a good idea at release.
However with long established economies and routines, it would wreak havoc everywhere it was implemented. Too many people rely on resources and this would severely crush the supply, sending prices skyrocketing.
You can't take a supply of millions of units a day and then stifle it down to a few hundred thousand or so. It'd be a nightmare.

....
The concern for architects is that we're the ones selling the harvesters and if this change were implemented then the demand for our harvesters would probably drop very drastically.
I'm not personally worried though, it doesn't seem like thisidea has any chance of being implemented given the huge impact it could have on the economy in general.
