Thread: BE or Ranger... what do you think?

I'll never drop M.C.H., but I'm bored with Smuggler...

So, I'm either gonna go back to being aRanger again, or a B.E. again.

I can't do both.

Being a B.E. would suck without tracking skills, right?

so I thought maybe I'd go back to being a Ranger, andgroup with B.E.'s to find samples.

As a M.C.H., I'm gonna be dependant on M.B.E.'s from now on, so I either want to BE a B.E., or find a way to HELP a B.E. in the hopes of getting pets more easily from them...

What do you guys (B.E.'s respond only please) think?

Would it be veryhelpful to have a Ranger tag along when looking for dna samples?

Or should I just go straight to M.B.E. myself without any Ranger skills?

I'm just looking for something fun to do.

I hear Rangers can apply their Camouflage kits to others and have that make their Mask Scent use the Ranger's skills, which makes it nigh unbreakable if it's a high-level Ranger. That would be very helpful to Bio-Engineers trying to get samples of DNA from nasty critters.

I have a character who is a ranger. While I love the idea of being a ranger, the ranger class really doesn't offer much beyond tracking ability imho.

Right now I am 2-1-3-2 in ranger, and even after all that skill point investment the only thing I really value in all that is the camp that you get with novice ranger, the ability to track animals, and one pretty good new trap. Really that's it, and that "costs" 41 skill points just to get that. I have the ability to make cammo kits and they suck imo. I'm sure they'd be better at higher level, but even with two boxes of skill and +15 tissues enhancing the skill, it still is less effective than simply mask scent. Even the high level rangers say they use mask scent almost exclusively. The extra foraging ability you're supposed to get is worthless. You get the exact same stuff you do as a scout. The extra terrain navigation I also find to be pretty worthless, especially with vehicles now, nobody will ever walk again, lol. The extra harvest ability isn't really all that noticable over master scout. Even 3 boxes into it I get something like a whopping 25% more than master scout (wohoo! not). I think I'm going to change my ranger to be 0-0-3-0 and do something else with the extra skill points.

MCH + MBE + Ranger 0-0-3-0 would give you most of what you want (track creatures & NPCs & distance).

That's 250 of 250 points.

a weaponless MCH?

maybe in the "old days", but not today.

I am a Master Ranger, and I have to say... purely from a skill points perspective, its kind of waste.

I wouldn't trade it for anything... I love the profession, and there are some really cool changes being promised to it. In the future Master Ranger will be VERY nice. Uber-hunters as they should be. But for now, its more of a role-playing, mind thing for me.

Camo is good, but it doesnt work perfectly. It will be fixed.

The camps are very nice, but only if you like to hunt in larger parties. If you solo, they are not worth the work to get them.

The track skill is a very nice thing to have. I am not able to get missions of any stature by myself, but I usually just take what I can get for the cash and then track for the animals I want. This too is not perfect, but it does help. Especially looking for babies.

One thing that people neglect to mention is the creature knowledge and creature harvesting bonuses you get. I harvest about 35% more than my Scout/Doctor buddy. And believe me.. my BE friends are thankful for that when I am dropping all the meat on them.

I think Master CH/Ranger is a great combo, but so is Master CH/BE. Personally, I wouldnt mind being a Master BE/Ranger but that leaves you with NO weapons skills.

Yea, but that was my point. You are a master ranger, and have spend 150 or whatever skill points to get there and your big payoff is 35% more harvests???? That just seems nuts to me. If you were to compare like much more powerful a master pistoleer is than a master marksman, or how much better a gun a master weaponsmith can make than a master artisan, or how much better a master chef can make food than a master artisan, the difference is like 100x or maybe more. 35%! lol, that's just sad.

Well I've got a strange mix I'm MCH, 0-0-3-0 in Ranger, 0-0-4-0 in Pistoleer, 4-0-4-0 in Medic. MCH is no longer a money maker for me due to baby pets being pritty useless compaired to BE creatures (**edit** BE taking all our money.. hehe). I go out with my MBE (Oakrack) to hunt for DNA. I supply meat to novice BE's to grind, and I also supply Oak with meat. When needed I go out and hunt creatures which drop high lvl herb and avian (great money maker with the current naboo avian). In return I get pets that I need, and its great fun when the final pets get put together I also do pvp using my pistoleer skill, not the best but! its still good fun, waiting for the perfect BE PVP creature.

Medic wise I buy myself good D's and get nice heals of 1800 or so (great for the 10k HAM pets) I also used to solo things like giant dune kimos, and peko peko albertross for their RIS drop.. not tried it since the patch due to the albertross getting that bloody 64k HAM and 80% resis to heat sigh, and theres no good DX2's out there to use against the ablertross (acid is one weakness, as it only has about 35% resis to it)

All in all I have good fun, but I wouldn't mind being a MBE.. but what would I dump? lol Oakrack would hate me if I dumped my ranger skills as they become very VERY useful on dna hunts.

I guess some of us are concerned with things OTHER than building an "uber" character. I fill a role.. a very useful one... and I couldn't do it as well if I wasn't a Master Ranger. That's all the matters to me at the moment.

Well, that's cool. Rangers are great for role-playing. I thought that's what we were talking about though, usefulness.

Oh, I agree with you... the experience points cost for what you get is ridiculous, however, there are still ways that a Master Ranger can make himself useful that no one else can.

And eventually I am confident that the devs will get around to addressing Ranger concerns, and that will certainly be "sooner" rather than "later" if there are current Rangers complaining rather than people saying "Well, I would give Ranger a try if they only fixed this or that".

depends on if you want to be a pure support player that Ranger and CH would make you or if you want to make your own animals to your own specs.

I miss being a ranger and master scout... but that's just me... I like being able to tell everything I could from a pet, track and make large camps... did really do camo though...

man, i would love to have a ranger go out with me to not only track the animals i want to sample, but also to give me information on what specials, cl, etc. various animals are. i might consider doing it myself but i think that it's ridiculous that it's basically become a requirement for be now if you want to have any real success with your cloning, and besides, i don't have the skill point left, lol.

anyway, to answer your question, yes, as a master bio-engineer, i would love to have a ranger along when i go out to sample dna. might be kinda boring for ya, though . . .
