....Okay you guys seem like a friendly and helpful lot and I can't wait to become experienced and be able to contribute something worthwhile to these forums. In the meantime I am a noob to SWG and a bigger noob to the BE profession. My current BE skills are as follows: 1314 and I am working on x4xx right now. I intend to Master BE but mainly supply taylor and chef products and then later maybe dabble in the creature engineering part of the profession.

Background in placeI put the following post on the kettemoor forum:

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=kettemoor_trade&message.id=118697#M118697

....as you can see noone replied so I am here begging you experienced BE's for advice. How do I get a start in this profession?

Thanks

First piece of advice: spell checker, lol, ok that's hitting below the belt, but reading that post was a bit hard on my eyes (e.g. "taylor" and "artisian").

Anyhow, I think you're going to have a very hard time being a tissue supplier without any survey skills. I think realistically, this is a skill requirement for you, so you'll have to make some sacrifices in order to get it. I get by with only survey 1 in artisan, but couldn't get by without any less, that's for sure.

The reality is that you are going to need resources that almost nobody else in the game needs aside from other bio engineers(for example high quality wood)and the resource suppliers mainly cater to more populous classes like doctor and weaponsmith. Also, I really don't think there are a large number of novice artisan surveyers looking for work. Even a guy who doesn't macro can grind through artisan in an hour or two on his way to an advanced crafting class, so at that point they no longer become interested in being a surveyer for money. It's possible you could befriend another artisan (or better yet another bio engineer) and work something out with them, but I suspect this is going to be a festering thorn in your side for a long time until you change your template and adress the problem.

As far as products that you can make, with your current skillset you can make some marketable tissues. On the tailor side, active bio sensors, active tranquilizers, and advanced myoflex will be a good seller for you if you can get them +13 or higher (which is possible prior to master). Most of the other tissues you may have trouble selling until you get get them a little higher (+15 or so) range. For the chef stuff, the only ones that sell are micronutrient supplements and broad spectrum nutrients (and intelligent nanonutrients but those are a master box item). I've had a tough time selling lower quality nutrients to be honest, so I'm not sure how you are going to fare selling those before becoming a master bio engineer. You might try a batch of BSN and MNS and see if you can sell them on the bazar or something. But I think the problem you're going to run into with those is that the margins are already very low on those to begin with, and you are going to have to heavily discount them because of their low quality before you become a master bio engineer, so I'm really doubtful that they will be worth your time to make.

Hope that helps.

In terms of your post on your trade forum:

Green Italics = bad!

You talk too much

Taylor != Tailor

Too many questions for a trade forum.

In marketting you've got to grab people's attention in the first couple of sentences or they're going to move on.

Start by remembering that these ugly forums have lots of different background colours to choose from, your text colour may not be readable on all of them.

If you want to grab the attention of tailors, take a minute to spell it correctly, its a small thing but you dont want your potential clientelle being put off straight away.

OK, my eyes have adjusted and I've read through the post.

First off your questions to chefs and tailors would be better placed here, or on the chef and tailor forums.

Secondly you need a better post title.

It should shout out what you want so anyone interested is going to be immediately drawn to your thread. What you're looking for is a miner, which arent necessarily primarly artisans.

In summary:

  • Stick with the default font colour

  • Keep your trade messages short and to the point
  • Use a catchy post title that tells people what you're after

  • Keep the n00b questions away from your trade messages and in the profession forums

  • Use the in game search function to find chefs and tailors if your business is all custom order (no vendor)

I'm a dumbass i should have caught the spelling mistakes and the color wasn't even something I considered. My background is set to the default black I assumed everyone's was. In case it's not obvious to you yet this is my first MMOG, I am a big PC gamer I usually just play solo.

I guess that's what I get when I do game stuff at work.

Thank you both very much for the advice, artisan is in my future then. Perhaps I should work into Merchant too get vendors also.

Yeah, I'd swear by having your own vendor for sure--get at least business III. I personally have a deal worked out with somene for surveying, not on a cost basis at all--I go by the "rifle" premise, and hit a good resource spawn with every harvester and lot that I've got or can borrow easily, so usually this isn't that big of a pain.

Oh, and I once said Iw as going to dojust tissues once ^_^ the "eventually I might make a few pets" turned into quite an operation, heh heh. They're fun, trust me, no better feeling than when my customers are bragging FOR me to their friends, lol.
