Thread: Mutant Rancors: What's the story?

I went to the rancor caves. Interesting place.

I went down into the caves, past a gnarled rancor, where I saw a couple mutants. The gnarled didn't see me. Mask scent didn't break. I got within 20m of a mutant rancor... boom. Its chasing me. I run to the entrance of the cave, and kill it. I go back down, thinking this misplaced aggro is just a fluke.

Long story short, this happens 3 more times. So I ended up just getting one sample off the gnarled before it dies, and I have 4 mutant rancor kills under my belt but no DNA samples, which is why I went there.

Whats the story? How come I can't get close to these guys to sample them?

Mutant Rancors are extremely tempermental, but it's possible to poke em in the butt if you have a high level mask scent. Even still, they'll go crazy most of the times youfail to get a DNA sample.

I tried putting on my bandoleer/camos with +mask scent, ends up to +96 mask scent which is around the best I can do with what I have. Didn't seem to matter.

Ive been going to the cave on Dathomir for a few weeks now collecting DNA, and found something strange. Maybe its just me, but inside the cave they do the same to me. They start attacking even though mask scent doesnt break. However, lately I started making sure they follow me out of the cave, and get them about 300m away from the cave before I get away from them. When I head back, they are still outside the cave and seem to be MUCH easier to sample. I even got 5 samples from one just a few days ago this way. BTW, Im a novice ranger, so my mask scent is 100, but I only have 15/15 mask scent/camo pants to help me out...

i have +125 mask scent, and they still flip out on me...i hunted mutant rancors for about 5 days straight, and it was a royal pain in the ass...enraged used to kill me faster, but they were a more reliable source of dna..too bad the devs moved them up to clvl 80 so that leaves us with our little retard friend the mutant rancors...gnarled rancors are pretty tame for sampling..i can usually sample a whole nest to death with only one aggro, which i just run away from anyway (master BE/ranger doesn't really leave much room for rancor level combat )

but yes, mutant rancor will randomly aggro you withough breaking mast scent...it sucks...it's a pain...so to get 5 samples good enough to make a lvl 70 creature, i often have to spend 3 hours, trying to sample, getting slain, and running back..not to mention finding the bastards in the first place..i'll have to check out these caves..are they a POI?

I sympathise with your situation, I've just made Master Ranger and am missing my combat skills, but I like the Ranger profession to much to give it up. Plus I'm a sampler not a fighter

I'd like waypoints for this as well. Pretty please. I spent a couple of hours wandering around Darth yesterday, found one Young Rancor and that vanished. Obviously took one look at my needle and ran

Just so you know most caves which contain loot containers usually have triggers nearby that ensure that certain enemies always aggro when you approach it, a good example is the droid cave on Lok where you can walk around without being bothered at all. Soon as you come near certain containers nearby droideka simply aggro onto you.

The rancor caves are at -4228, -2084.

I dont have master scout... not enough points or I would... what other CL 60-75 mobs are worth sampling? I'm not necessarily interested in making CL 70 pets per se... just higher level ones than the mid-20's I'm making now.

There is only 3 species other than the mutant rancor that I'm aware are from CL60 and higher. Those are the bull rancor, arachne queen and the barkmite burrower queen. Thats it.

What else is worth sampling, then?

I spent, more or less, 2 days there. Camped near the cave, and logged back in the next day. Anyway, had similar experience to yours with getting attacked whenever I went into the cave. Anyway, since they have an AoEattack, they eventually started attacking each other. I have MCH as well as MBE, so I used my pet to kill them all inside the cave (mainly let them kill each other). When a few respawned, it was a lot easy to sample them. And if they attacked, I ran around and used my pet until they started attacking each other again. A few timesI waschased out the cave and I ran. Then, Icame back and sampled the one who chased me outside the cave. Was a lot of fun at times, but didn't get too many samples. Got more samples in much less time from Mutant Rancorsfurther north where they spawn in the open. Mostly West and a little South of the northern Dath outpost.

Is it possible to sample any of those at sampling 4? I have gotten close to mutants and burrower queens but havnt got one sample. Do I need to wait to master to try to sample over 60 creatures?I am close just need the dreaded apprentice xp,and I would rather spend my time making pets than standing in the spaceport yelling "training ch skills" all day
